U.S. Open Cup – Timbers advance to face Seattle in round 3 after upending Kitsap by Kip Kesgard at OregonLive

For the second year in a row, the U.S. Open Cup will feature a matchup of Pacific Northwest soccer rivals. This is not a reprint from 2009, although the teams and results are nearly identical this season. In the 2009 tournament, Portland advanced to face Seattle at PGE Park on July 1, 2009in the third round after defeating Kitsap in the first round, then Sonoma County in round two; for the 2010 tournament, Portland defeated a visiting Sonoma County team on June 15th before traveling to Bremerton, WA on June 22nd to face the Kitsap Pumas in round two. At stake was the right for the winner to host the Sounders on June 30th in round three. [more]

You Have to Be Loving Your Boys Right Now! at Dropping Timber

What a great 12 hours it was as Portland kicked off in Bremerton and got an impressive result against the Kitsap Pumas, to set up what we all were hoping for a battle against seattle in our house. The Timbers played some great football yesterday and made us all proud. Ross Smith has show prowess in the air, and used it to full effect to start the Timbers up. Then Dike had his coming out party and lit up Kitsap for the hat trick. This is now two wins in a row for the Timbers, something they have not done since the first two games of the season. [more]

But first . . .

Timbers season ticket sales spike by Jessica Hoch at Oregon Business

The Portland Timbers have snagged 1,000 season ticket deposits over the past 10 days for their 2011 Major League Soccer inaugural season, according to Chris Metz, Vice President of Communications. The Timbers announced their MLS season ticket information last week, coinciding with the start of the 2010 World Cup, and what’s turned out to be a frenzy of U.S. soccer buzz as the mens team squeezed its way out of the first round of competition. Win Free Tickets to Timbers vs. Manchester City on July 17th

On Saturday, July 17th 2010, I’ll be dressed in grey slacks and a long sleeve white shirt, probably sweating in sweltering heat, at an undisclosed location on Sauvie Island; one of my best friends is getting married. I’ve known the guy since first grade. I don’t think I can get out of it 😉

But my obligation is your gain – I have a pair of tickets I can’t use to the Portland Timbers friendly against Manchester City at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland, on the same day. [more]

June 25-27: Organic Beer, Scandinavian Midsummer, Sunday Parkways, and the Timbers

Friday-Sunday

NAOBF
North American Organic Brewers Festival 2010

The 6th annual North American Organic Brewers Festival takes place this Friday through Sunday, June 25th through 27th, at Overlook Park (Yellow Line will take you right there!).

This is my favorite summer brewers festival. It does not (yet . . .) get nearly as crowded as the Big One, and it’s not as expensive as the Pearl One. And so far (this will be the 6th NAOBF) the crowds aren’t nearly as obnoxious. [more]

Saturday

Scandinavian Midsummer Festival 2010

The 82nd annual Scandinavian Heritage Foundation Midsummer Festival takes place this Saturday, June 26th at the German American Cultural Center (7901 SE Division). Karelian Folk Ensemble will all be there [more]

Sunday

Sunday ParkwaysNorth Portland Sunday Parkways

The second Sunday Parkways of 2010 takes place this Sunday, June 27th in North Portland.

This is an opportunity to spend a pleasant summery Sunday morning and afternoon (10am to 3pm) winding your way on bike or foot through the mostly residential, car free, streets of North Portland. The routes take you from one park to the next, where you can check out the vendors and demonstrations, or just sit down and relax. For this week’s event, the parks include Peninsula, Arbor Lodge, Kenton, Trenton, and the Willamette Bluff. [more]

TimbersPortland Timbers vs Tampa Bay Rowdies

The FC Tampa Bay Rowdies make their inaugural trip to Portland this Sunday, June 27th to take on the Portland Timbers at PGE Park. Kick off is an early 5pm.

The Timbers are coming off their league first road win in a long time, last Saturday at Minnesota. The Timber also beat the Kitsap Pumas this week in a US Open Cup match. The Seattle Flounders visit Portland next Wednesday, June 30th in a third round matchup.

A Logo for Portland

June 23, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

A website called CitID is collecting logos and artwork for cities all over the world. The rules for submission include that the arwork must contain the name of the city and should (if possible) aim to catch the vibe of the city (If you’re at artist, consider submitting your design!).

Currently three designs have been submitted for Portland. They’re all kinda groovy. I can’t say which one I like best. They all include rain! Below is a sliver of each (click on image to be taken to the full image at the CitID website).

Dave Knows Turns 3!

June 22, 2010 by Dave Knows 8 Comments

3rd Birthday at Farrell'sThree years ago today this blog was born. Over 1024 posts and 1871 comments later, there’s no end in sight – seems like there’s something interesting going on all the time in Portland, and I have yet to run out of opinions!

Fittingly, the first post was about beer. Later that first week I blogged about the Timbers for the first time. As long time readers know these are recurring themes at Dave Knows Portland.

In the blog’s inaugural year, I averaged 4.9 posts per week. Last year I got that to 5.1, and now it’s up to 6.5. The last few months I’ve averaged close to two posts a day. Visitor traffic is up too, of course, but the frequency of posts is the most interesting statistic to me personally. It’s an indicator of how much I enjoy researching, writing, sharing, and interacting with readers. This blog provides plenty of opportunity for all of these.

So on that note I want to thank you for reading, commenting, and linking – this blog would be rather pointless without you!

Photographed in Portland: Locals vs Tourists

June 22, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Photographer Eric Fischer has assembled maps of over a hundred world cities, including Portland, Oregon, showing locations geotagged by locals and tourists on Flickr and Picasa.

Here’s what Portland looks like, from the set Locals and Tourists:

Portland Tourists and Locals

Blue points on the map are pictures taken by locals (people who have taken pictures in this city dated over a range of a month or more).

Red points are pictures taken by tourists (people who seem to be a local of a different city and who took pictures in this city for less than a month).

Yellow points are pictures where it can’t be determined whether or not the photographer was a tourist (because they haven’t taken pictures anywhere for over a month). They are probably tourists but might just not post many pictures at all.

Check out the Geotaggers’ World Atlas map of Portland too, for undifferentiated geotagged locations.
