Tuesday Timbers Tidbits (07/06/2010)

July 6, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersWith their 0-0 draw Saturday with the Vancouver Whitecaps, the Portland Timbers moved into 3rd place in the USL Conference (NSC Minnesota have since drawn even in points, but have played two more matches than the Timbers).

I unfortunately missed this game [camping!]. By all accounts, however, the match was a dour encounter. In the teams’ defense, it was the third match in six days for the Portland Timbers, and third match in seven days for Vancouver.

The Timbers Army tifosi, however, were in fine form – for Cascadia!

Many fellow Cascadians, part of the Vancouver Southsiders, made the trip down to Portland, and enjoyed some good ol’ Timbers Army hospitality. It’s a wonder how much classier Vancouverites are than our other neighbors to the North.

Cascadia CupWith the draw the Timbers lead 4 points to 1 in the 2010 Cascadia Cup competition [the logo of which sorely needs an update – gah!]. The next two Cascadia Cup matches are in Vancouver, so everything rides on how well the Timbers finish the season.

In league play the Timbers have one more home match, next Saturday, July 10th, against Miami FC, and then hit the road for four matches until a return home to face Minnesota on August 11th. Meanwhile the Timbers host Club Atlas Sunday, and Manchester City on Saturday July 17th (at Merlo Field) in friendlies.

And finally, in player news, Ian Paul Joy may bleed FC St. Pauli brown, but he’s on a mission to help the Portland Timbers become Champions in their final season in the United Soccer Leagues before moving to Major League Soccer next season, which will be a special moment for me to help them become a force in America’s Major Leagues.

July 10: Bastille Day Festival in the Pearl

July 5, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Bastille DayThe 8th Annual Bastille Day Festival takes place this Saturday, July 10th from noon until 8pm at Jamison Square Park in the Pearl District. Admission is free.

The Fête de la Bastille commemorates the storming of the Bastille Prison on le quatorze juillet, 1789. In Portland we celebrate with the 6th Annual Portland Waiters Race, musical acts, French food and wine and a themed market, pétanque demonstrations and lessons, a singing of La Marseillaise, and a Jardin of Wine and Beer (featuring Kronenbourg beers, Lillet aperitifs, and wines from Georges Duboeuf and W.J. Deautsch, including Mâcon Villages Blanc 2007, Beaujolais Villages 2007; Loire Sauvion Rosé d’Anjou 2007; and Marquis de Perlade).

I made it to this festival a few years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed the Jardin of Wine and Beer. The only problem with this fest is that it’s the same day as the Mississippi Avenue Street Fair. Fortunately Pix Patisserie (3901 D N Williams) also throws a Fête de la Bastille, and has scheduled theirs for July 17th this year – details forthcoming!

Pelada Screens in Portland

July 3, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Update: Pelada‘s run at Portland’s Hollywood Theater (4122 NE Sandy) has been extended – it will run from Friday, July 23rd – Thursday, July 29th!

PeladaPelada, a film about soccer away from the bright light and manicured field, will be screening in Portland at the Hollywood Theater (4122 NE Sandy) from July 9th through the 16th.

Christopher Clarey writes about the film in the New York Times:

Soccer is ever more the global game, and that is not only because of the expanding reach of the professional variety, with its Messis and Ronaldos and the World Cup finals looming larger on the horizon.

It is global because at any given moment, some group of friends or strangers is chasing a ball across the dirt, grass, sand or cement with no paying public to validate it.

“All over the world there are games you never hear about,” Luke Boughen says in the new film Pelada.

The quest to find and find meaning in those games is the focus of this documentary brimming with energy and optimism that was made by four Americans, three of whom were once collegiate soccer players.

The Friday, July 9th Portland debut of the film features a post-film Q&A session with film director and subject Gwendolyn Oxenham.

$1 of each ticket will be donated to the sports initiatives of Mercy Corps, a Portland based organization dedicated to alleviating suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities.

Match Day (07/03/2010): Portland Timbers vs Vancouver Whitecaps

July 3, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersThe Portland Timbers host the Vancouver Whitecaps Saturday, July 3rd at PGE Park. The match kicks off at 7pm. The Timbers Army Craft Brew Tailgate begins at 3pm!

The Timbers began the 2010 season in fine form, with three home wins and a respectable tie on the road at defending champions Montreal. The last win in that stretch was against Vancouver, who Montreal beat in last year’s final. But then, as April came to an end, things abruptly changed. While Vancouver have played themselves to the top of the NASL conference standings, the Timbers went winless in league play throughout May and half of June. Mired in fourth place in the USL Conference, the Timbers need a strong finish to the season to make the playoffs.

Fortunately, the Timbers may have regained their early season form, with two league wins and a series of strong US Open Cup performances. If they still have legs (today’s match is the team’s third in under than a week), they should be able to defend their home field and come away with a good result.

Visit The Timber Mill, the Portland Timbers Blog at The Offside, Dropping Timber, and of course the Portland Timbers website for more match previews!
