August 15: Southeast Portland Sunday Parkways

August 8, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Sunday ParkwaysThe fourth Sunday Parkways of 2010 takes place Sunday, August 15 in Southeast Portland.

This is an opportunity to spend a pleasant summery Sunday morning and afternoon (10am to 3pm) winding your way on bike or foot through the mostly residential, car free, streets of Southeast Portland. The eight mile route take you from one park to the next, where you can check out the vendors and demonstrations, or just sit down and relax.

The Southeast event, just like last year, coincides with the Hawthorne Street Fair, so make a day of it.

Sunday Parkways Map

Heather and I have participated in several Portland Sunday Parkways – we walked the very first one in North Portland in 2008, and last year we rode bikes in the Southeast Portland event. We highly recommend participating.

Portland Simple Living Advocate Tammy Strobel Featured in New York Times

August 8, 2010 by Dave Knows 3 Comments

Tammy StrobelPortlander Tammy Strobel‘s simple living story is featured in a New York Times article today about the consumer trend towards simplicity – Consumers Find Ways to Spend Less and Find Happiness.

A two-bedroom apartment. Two cars. Enough wedding china to serve two dozen people.

Yet Tammy Strobel wasn’t happy. Working as a project manager with an investment management firm in Davis, Calif., and making about $40,000 a year, she was, as she put it, caught in the “work-spend treadmill.”

So one day she stepped off.

Read the rest of the article to find out how she and her husband, Logan Smith, overhauled their spending habits, got out of debt, and simplified their lives.

Tammy blogs about social change through simple living at RowdyKittens. She’s also a photographer, designer, and author.

Her story has been an inspiration to Heather and me, as we just recently got out of debt and have begun planning a simpler future together. Read my April interview with Tammy to find out more about her work, tiny houses, and the origin of her blog’s quirky name!

New York Times Explores Portland Happy Hours

August 7, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

New York Times For some reason, the New York Times is writing about happy hour food specials in Portland: Bar + Food | Portland’s Happiest Hours.

Are food specials at happy hour a special phenomena? I wouldn’t think so, but according the T Magazine article other towns — notably Seattle, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Charleston, S.C. — also serve cheap eats in the late afternoon, Portland has been doing it since the last recession. Huh.

Accanto, Clark Lewis, Wildwood, Olympic Provisions, and Nostrana are the formidable Portland restaurants that garner accolades for their fine happy hour food specials in the article.

If they were to have asked me, I would also have suggested:

Lincoln – for their $4 crispy fritter of the day, $5 greens and shaved fennel with almonds, and of course the $7 poutine, featuring fries, lamb gravy and cheese curds!

Papa Haydn (east) – $5 pork rillette, country pate, and their delicious poutine with hand-cut kennebeck fries, pulled chicken, thyme gravy and cheese curds!

(Don’t worry, the New York Times will come round to appreciating poutine eventually . . .)
