R. Crumb’s Oregon Influences: Carl Barks and Basil Wolverton

August 6, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Keep On Truckin'Robert Crumb, the artist and illustrator behind Fritz the Cat, Mr. Natural, and Keep on Truckin’, is one of America’s most revered cartoonists.

And he frequently cites two Oregon artists, Carl Barks and Basil Wolverton as major influences.

On the occasion of a special exhibition at the Portland Art Museum (1219 SW Park) of The Bible Illuminated: R. Crumb’s Book of Genesis, the folks at the Oregon Cartoon Institute asked Patrick Rosenkranz, the author of Rebel Visions: The Underground Comix Revolution 1963-1975, and Charles Boucher, the owner of CounterMedia (927 SW Oak), to address the Barks and Wolverton influence on R. Crumb’s work.

Anne Richardson has more at Oregon Movies, A to Z, Carl Barks + Basil Wolverton = Genius R. Crumb, where you can also read about Basil Wolverton’s direct influence on R. Crumb’s illustrated Bible project.

August 6-8: Woodburn Fiesta Mexicana 2010

August 6, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Woodburn Fiesta MexicanaThe 47th annual Woodburn Fiesta Mexicana takes place this weekend, August 6 through 8, 2010.

The festival’s beginnings can be traced to 1964, when merchant Russell Baglien and the local Chamber of Commerce threw a small casual event at the 1/2 block library park.

After 1964, the first “Fiesta” created energy of its own. More people heard about it, more people came and today the “FIESTA” is the largest and most recognized annual event in Woodburn, as well as, the surrounding communities. The population of migrant people who came to the area to work and return to their native states has now evolved into a significant Mexican-American population; the majority are recent immigrants. Three factors worked in tandem in changing the demographics in this area or Marion County: (1) fertile soil and many crops that thrive in our climate; (2) farmers in need of expanding their agricultural products and (3) the families from the southwest who were willing to venture to the area in search of a better life. The rest is history; and each family with their own unique story on why they settled in the Woodburn area.

Today the Woodburn Fiesta features authentic food from various regions of Mexico, salsa dancing, charros, and fútbol. A Fiesta Court represents Woodburn and other communities.

The festival is held at Legion Park, and runs from noon until 11pm on Friday, 10am until11pm on Saturday, and 10am until 9pm on Sunday. Admission is only $3 for adults, $1 for those 18 and under, and infants get in free.

Portland Timbers Roundup (08/06/2010)

TimbersLots of news (I might have to think about doing these Timbers news roundups more than twice a week!).

Match Reports

Game 20: Rochester 1 – Timbers 0 by mao at The Portland Timbers USL Blog at The Offside

A first half goal by Kénold Versailles was enough to see Rochester Rhinos past visiting Portland Timbers, 1-0. The failure to equalize, even after goalkeeper Steve Cronin saved a Ryan Heins penalty and another Rochester goal was waved off due to offside, is a microcosm of this entire season for Portland. Rodrigo Lopez put two strong free kicks on frame late-on, but again the toothless Timbers attack prevented the collection of a single point. The four-game road trip thus results in just four points. Timbers fall to the Rhinos 1 nil by paulsepp at Dropping Timber

The Timbers controlled much of the second half, but could not overcome a 22nd minute goal by Kenold Versailles. Isaac Kissi poked the ball for Versailles who blasted a shot past Cronin from outside the box. The Timbers only managed to get one shot on goal in the first half. [more]

U-23 Timbers

Two Timbers and Pumas Mark Lee Makes PDL All Star Side at Prost Amerika Soccer

The success of football in the Pacific Northwest received further acknowledgment this week. Kitsap Pumas highly rated left back Mark Lee has received the ultimate accolade from his league. He has been selected to the all-league team for the Premier Development League. [more]

And don’t forget, the Timbers U-23s begin PDL championship run Friday (see Tuesday’s Timbers Tidbits for more details).

MLS 2011

At the OregonLive Timbers Blog, Kips Kesgard looks to the Timbers future, in two parts:

Building an MLS roster part 1 – Not as easy as it might first appear

Building an MLS roster part 2 – Targeting experience that isn’t already spent

Player News

The Timbers, sorely in need of a consistent offensive threat, have signed Dutch striker Ibad Muhamadu. Muhamadu most recently played for FC Dordrecht, where he had 8 goals in 18 outings.

Bruce Savage, the father of Portland midfielder Keith Savage, has retired from coaching. One benefit of which is that he will be able to travel and watch my son Keith play soccer for the Portland Timbers. Recovering from a knee injury, Keith saw his first regular season action this year in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Tampa Bay.

And former Timber Alan Gordon, the longest tenured LA Galaxy player, has been traded to Chivas USA. In 2004 he was the USL rookie of the year with the Timbers.

Supporter News

The Timbers Army is Ready, so declares TheOriginalWinger.com. But of course we already knew that.

Timbers Army veteran Steven D. Lenhart has scored spots in an international football photography exhibit in Poland for two of is amazing photographs of the Army.

And the Timbers Army Trailer, RIP, has been replaced, by the Timbers Army Van! It needs some work though – help raise repair money by bidding at items donated by TA members!
