Portland Men: Learn Floral Design, Drink Beer

August 5, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Sign up now for Beer & Bloom, a floral design workshop for men only, at Botanica Floral Design (412 NW Couch) on August 19, 2010.

According to a recent but not very scientific survey, Portland ranked 50 out of 50 as the nation’s Manliest City! Well seeing as how we can’t get any less manly, the time has come to embrace your inner ‘gentle’man and join us for our first ever Men’s Only floral design class. (Hey, you never know when you may be in a MacGyver-like situation where this skill may come in handy!))

Drink beer for a few hours while learning to arrange manly flowers – nothing more Portland than that!

Visit Botanica Floral Design’s In Store Events page for details.

August 5: 7th Planet Picture Show presents Glitter

August 5, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

GlitterPortland’s answer to MST3K, the 7th Planet Picture Show, takes place at 7pm this Thursday, August 5 2010 at Mount Tabor Theater (4811 SE Hawthorne).

Host Will Radik will be joined by Michelle DeFord and Polly Pospisil to comment on the infamous Mariah Carey vehicle, Glitter!

Billie Frank is a shy, young mixed-race girl who is sent away by her alcoholic mother at a very early age. At an orphanage, she befriends Louise and Roxanne. Flash forward to 1983. Billie and her friends are spotted by a record producer, Timothy Walker, who wants them to sing backup for his latest pop-music discovery. But when super DJ Dice hears Billie’s incredible voice, he makes a shady deal with Timothy to get her out of that dead-end situation. Soon, Billie and Dice are making hits inside the studio, and falling in love outside of it. Eventually, the pressure of her newfound celebrity puts too heavy a strain on Billie, forcing her to decide what it is she really wants from Dice, and what she wants for herself.

Show is free, but there’s an entirely optional suggested donation of $5. There’s a bar too, so you must be 21 and over to attend!

Don’t forget to dress glittery!

The Washington Post Discovers Cascadian Dark Ales

August 5, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Washington PostAn emerging beer style, CDA marries hops and dark malts is the title of a Washington Post article about the emergence of the distinctively Pacific Northwest beer style, the Cascadian Dark Ale (aka Black IPA).

CDAs have a unique flavor profile that you can’t duplicate merely by mixing a stout and an IPA. Brewers prefer such hop varieties as Cascade, Centennial, Simcoe and Amarillo, aromatic American strains with flavors often likened to grapefruit, lemon or orange. Hopping rates are often greater than in normal IPAs, and dry-hopping – adding hops during the fermentation or later – is a common practice.

In addition to giving readers of the Post a quick education on Cascadia, some fine local brews garner mention in the article, include Hopworks’ Secession Black India Pale Ale, and Deschutes’ Hop in the Dark.
