First Soccer Game at PGE Park: October 21, 1893

August 16, 2010 by Dave Knows 7 Comments

Multnomah Field Soccer - October 21, 1893Most histories of Portland’s PGE Park, like this official history at PGEPark.com, focus on the legacy of baseball, and generally don’t include soccer in the list of athletic activities hosted at the location in its early days. The early days start in 1893 when the Multnomah Amateur Athletic Club (now the MAC – Amateur was dropped) leased the present site and dubbed it Multnomah Field.

Andrew Guest uncovered some of the soccer history in his excellent article on the New Portland Stadium with Old Soccer History in April, including that in 1905, during the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, Multnomah Field hosted a Pacific Coast Championship of soccer; what could be described as a precursor to the Cascadia Cup.

But was that the first time soccer was played at Multnomah Field?

After spending a day digging around in the Oregonian archives, I found reference to what may be the first soccer game ever played at Multnomah Field, which eventually became Multnomah Stadium, then Civic Stadium, and is now known as PGE Park.

From page 3 of the The Morning Oregonian, Saturday, October 21st, 1893:

The third game between the Astoria and Portland football association teams will be played on Multnomah field this afternoon, commencing at 3 o’clock. There is a marked difference between association and university or Rugby football. The latter is the more commonly played in the country, though in the former science is brought into play more than actual strength, the foot being used to carry the ball, instead of the hand. The only exception to this rule is the goal-keeper, who is permitted to handle the ball.

Read the entire article below. It’s definitely soccer that is described. (The following day’s Sunday Oregonian reveals that the Portland team beat Astoria 5 to 0, and that attendance was very good, and a great deal of interest was expressed, especially by the crowd of Astorians who came up to back their team.)

Saturday, August 14 2010: Happy Van-Holiday!

August 14, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Van HolidayVan-Holiday takes place every Saturday the 14th. But what is Van-Holiday, you ask?

Van-Holiday is the celebration of your Inner Rock Star!

The guy who can belt out anthems that change the world. The woman who’s voice melts hearts and calls birds and small woodland creatures. The deadbeat, piece of used jet trash that can’t remember what town he’s in and never packs his own suitcase.

Each of us has one . . . simmering deep inside, waiting for that opportunity to dance on the table and release our demo.

What you do on Van-Holiday is up to you. To paraphrase the great American philosopher David Lee Roth, the beauty of Van Holiday is that there are no rules and no schools. You just make it up as you go.

WWDLRD?

Van-Holiday is the brainchild of friend-of-the-blog Dan Ermey, who by most standards celebrates his inner rock star every day. He wants the rest of us to have our chance too. Visit the Van-Holiday website to share your Van-Holiday photos and stories! And remember the wise words of David Lee Roth, it doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it’s how good you looked!

Best of the Blogroll: Portland Event Guides

August 13, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Best of the BlogrollOn a daily basis I try to spotlight the more interesting, and dare I say offbeat Portland area events.

But my event roundups are far from comprehensive.

The newspapers all have their event guides, but they primarily push the events they sponsor, and otherwise just publish inscrutable catalogs that are only useful if you’re already looking for a particular event (one notable exception however is OregonLive‘s Oregon Events).

So where would I recommend you find Portland area events? Well first of all, my blog 😉

But I do have some other recommendations.

  • PDX Pipeline – The Swiss Army knife of Portland event guides
  • Neighborhood Notes – Interesting city wide event picks
  • Around The Sun – Every Friday, a comprehensive weekend guide to free events
  • Bike Portland – Looking for events involving bikes? Bike Portland, of course, has you covered
  • Blogging Portland on the Cheap – Cheapo weekend deals and events (currently on hiatus, but returning soon)
