TimbersGame 21: Timbers 2 – Minnesota 2 by mao at Portland Timber USL Blog at The Offside

10-man Portland Timbers were held by NSC Minnesota Stars, 2-2 at sold out PGE Park. It was the first Timbers home game since July 10, but in what has become another disheartening run, Portland extended its winless streak to four games. Bright Dike and Ryan Pore scored goals for the Timbers, the former coming in particularly impressive fashion. But skipper Ian Joy was sent off, rather harshly, immediately after Pore’s second half goal, ultimately leading to Minnesota’s equalizer. Both sides came into the game on 27 points and leave on 28, just three points clear of four other clubs vying for playoff positions. [more]

Speaking of the new MLS Timbers coach

John Spencer Hired to Manage MLS Timbers by mao at Portland Timbers USL Blog at The Offside

Former Houston Dynamo assistant John Spencer has been hired by Portland Timbers as their first manager in the Major League Soccer era. The former Chelsea man and Scotland international resigned from his position at Houston on July 13, all but guaranteeing his expected move to Portland. [more]

Spencer stands out with Timbers by Paul Danzer at The Columbian

PORTLAND — John Spencer opened with a joke about his short stature.

But when owner Merritt Paulson and technical director Gavin Wilkinson talked Wednesday about the first head coach for the Major League Soccer Portland Timbers, they said the 5-foot-6 Spencer stood out during an almost year-long search. [more]

Missing: Mandjou Keita by Kevin at Dropping Timber

It’s unfortunate what’s happened with Keita this season. Heading into the year, Keita looked to be one of the front-runners to make the jump to the MLS with the team, but now he’s barely on the radar. How quickly things can turn from one season to the next in soccer. Keita is clearly a talented player, but often times seemed lackadaisical out on the field this season. [more]

John Rooney to Trial with Timbers by mao at Portland Timbers USL Blog at The Offside

John Rooney, younger brother of Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney, will be coming on trial with Portland Timbers this weekend. Currently in Seattle on trial with the Sounders of MLS, the young midfielder will head south on Friday to train with and workout for Gavin Wilkinson and newly appointed MLS manager John Spencer. Lots of love for Jimmy Conway by Kerry Eggers at the Portland Tribune

Jimmy Conway would probably be a little embarrassed by all the fuss. A lot of friends and family are going to a lot of trouble to pay tribute to the local soccer legend, who turned 64 on Tuesday. [more]

Talking Timbers 2011 at MLS Insider

Last night in USSF D-2 play, 2011 MLS debutantes the Portland Timbers drew 2-2 with the NSC Minnesota Stars. They also drew a sold out crowd of 15,418 on a Wednesday night. I’m not going to name names but we have a few clubs in this country that play at a higher level that would sell their first-borns for that number on a Saturday night. [more]

Timbers crowd mixes together bit of everything by Brian T. Smith at The Columbian

Always trust the ticket scalper.

When you want to know the truth or feel the pulse, the scalper is the source.

And the scalper spoke with passion and pride Wednesday, while holding up a cardboard “I want tickets” sign outside PGE Park in downtown Portland

“It’s beautiful,” the scalper said.

And it was. [more]

My very short-lived Portland Timbers career by Kip Kesgard at OregonLive.com

I’ve always admired the Portland Timbers organization, as they impress me with their desire to be an integral part of the soccer community. One of the programs they started last season was a Fantasy camp, giving fans of every skill level the chance to play on the same pitch with their idols. [more]

August 12: OMSI Science Pub

August 12, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Omsi Science PubOMSI’s Science Pub event for August 2010 takes place Thursday, August 12 at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne).

Science author Mary Roach discusses her new book Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void

Space is a world devoid of the things we need to live and thrive: air, gravity, hot showers, fresh produce, privacy, beer. Space exploration is in some ways an exploration of what it means to be human. How much can a person give up? How much weirdness can they take? What happens to you when you can’t walk for a year? have sex? smell flowers? What happens if you vomit in your helmet during a space walk? Is it possible for the human body to survive a bailout at 17,000 miles per hour? To answer these questions, space agencies set up all manner of quizzical and startlingly bizarre space simulations. As Mary Roach discovers, it’s possible to preview space without ever leaving Earth. From the space shuttle training toilet to a crash test of NASA’s new space capsule (cadaver filling in for astronaut), Roach takes us on a surreally entertaining trip into the science of life in space and space on Earth.

The event runs from 7 to 9pm, but arrive early (5pm doors open) to secure your beer, grub, and a seat! There’s a $3.00 suggested donation/cover charge. Minors are allowed in with parents.
