Match Day 08/11/2010: Portland Timbers vs NSC Minnesota Stars

August 11, 2010 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

TimbersAfter a month on the road, the Portland Timbers return to PGE Park this Wednesday, July 11 to face the NSC Minnesota Stars. The match kicks off at 7pm.

In the teams’ last meeting the Timbers won 2-0 in Minnesota, but that was two days after Minnesota beat Portland 1-0 at PGE Park. All of this took place in June. The Timbers’ recent form has not impressed, drawing once and losing three times on this most recent road trip. Minnesota, on the other hand, has earned points in their last five matches (1 win 4 draws). That stretch included a 1-1 draw at Vancouver, which isn’t too shabby.

Wednesday’s match is the annual Bark in the Park, which means that yes, you can bring your dog! Fewer than 2000 tickets remain available to this game, so buy your tickets now – the crowd will be a good one!

July 12: 7th Planet Picture Show presents Laboratory

August 10, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Martin KovePortland’s answer to MST3K, the 7th Planet Picture Show, takes place at 7pm this Thursday, August 12 2010 at Mount Tabor Theater (4811 SE Hawthorne).

The movie is one I’ve never heard of: Laboratory.  It stars Martin Kove, who’s one of those actors I recognize, but couldn’t really tell you where I’ve seen him . . .

The Laboratory is the principal setting for this derivative sci-fier. A few cultures, left alone in petri dishes, begin spontaneously generating tiny and malevolent creatures. It all turns out to be the handiwork of predatory extraterrestrials. Once the lab mutations have reached maturity, they set about to take over the world. Camille Mitchell, Corine Michaells and Martin Kove (the bad dude from The Karate Kid movies) costar in The Laboratory.

Oh yeah, the evil coach from Karate Kid! (For the life of me I can’t find a photo from Laboratory, so I’ve illustrated this post with a shot of Martin Kove in The Karate Kid)

Show is free, but there’s an entirely optional suggested donation of $5. 21 and over only, there’s a bar!

Portland Sucks Returns!

August 10, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Portland SucksMonday, August 9th marked the return of Portland Sucks, your daily dose of rants and immature and quasi-clueless observations from Robert Wagner.

The final broadcast of the original Portland Sucks was on Friday, May 7th, 2010.

Live from the crystal meth strip club capital of the Pacific Northwest, the subject of the first new episode‘s ranting is The Bite of Oregon, one of the more disappointing annual Portland festivals. Robert also regales us with the story of witnessing his first citizen’s arrest, and a heaping helping of self-congrats for making the return back from the dead, or something.

The new PDX Sucks is live every weekday at 9:30am on PDX.fm.

Details Magazine on the “Oregon-ization of America”

August 10, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Details MagazineArtisanal America is the title of an article in the August 2010 issue of Details magazine which examines how the artisanal movement became our national consumer religion.

Exalting the handmade, the painstakingly crafted, the authentic, is not just for hipsters in Portland and Brooklyn anymore— small-batch has mass appeal.

Cataloging how the American public is all hopped up on the spirit of the handcrafted, the painstakingly procured, the small-batch, writer Adam Sachs delves into the recent resurgence of interest in the artisanal. Portland, it should come as no surprise, garners several mentions.

Stumptown is described as excellent coffee purveyors out of that capital of easygoing hipness, Portland, Oregon, before Sachs starts waxing effusively about some mysterious Maine-made “Quoddy” shoes, and reporting on J. Crew’s new marketing campaign.

But, it’s not just about fashion, he writes, if the whole country feels like Portland these days, it’s because there has been an Oregon-ization of America.

It’s also about cured meets, pickled beets, and more Amish-like affectations.

In the accompanying photo gallery, Portland’s own Vanilla Bicycles and New Deal Distillery are featured.
