Halloween at the Oregon Zoo (2010)

October 27, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

SquishEach year the Oregon Zoo gets into the holiday spirit of Halloween, and this year is no different:

The Annual Squishing of the Squash takes place first on Friday, October 29 2010 at 10:30am, in the elephant area. The elephants will get to take out their frustrations on a huge pumpkin. Sure, it doesn’t make up for the miseries the IDA tells us they experience, but it provides zoo visitors with some great photograph opportunities! This event is free with your paid zoo admission.

And then Howloween at the Zoo takes place Saturday and Sunday October 30-31 2010, from 11am to 4pm.

Kids love trick-or-treating, and the Oregon Zoo provides a fun and safe setting for this Halloween tradition. Trick-or-treaters in their various costumes will participate in an exciting scavenger hunt leading them to activity stations around the zoo. Goodie bags filled with candy and prizes will be given out for completed hunts at the zoo’s exit.

Howloween activities are also free with zoo admission. Visit the Oregon Zoo website for more information.

Jane Austen and The AbbeyJane Austin fans from throughout the world are gathering this weekend, October 29-31 2010, in Portland, Oregon for the annual Jane Austen Conference. This year’s focus is the first novel she completed for publication: Northanger Abbey.

“It is such happiness when good people get together—and they always do.” And it is with great happiness that the Oregon/Southwest Washington Chapter of JASNA welcomes the good people of JASNA for the 2010 AGM in Portland. It will take place over the Halloween weekend (October 29-31), very fitting as this AGM will feature Northanger Abbey. The theme is “Jane Austen and the Abbey: Mystery, Mayhem and Muslin in Portland.”

Visit the event website for details.

28-Oct-2010: 7th Planet Picture Show Presents Despiser

October 26, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

DespiserPortland’s weekly answer to MST3K, the 7th Planet Picture Show, takes place at 7pm this Thursday, October 28 2010 at Mount Tabor Theater (4811 SE Hawthorne).

Join host Will Radik and guests at this special anniversary edition show as they provide commentary to accompany a crappy movie: Despiser!

Having just been fired and dumped by his wife, life couldn’t possibly be worse for independent artist GORDON HAUGE (Mark Redfield)–until he wrecks his car and finds himself in purgatory that is. Once there, he is attacked by fanatic Shadowmen and legions of Ragmen–souls being enslaved and bent to some dark purpose. Gordon is rescued by an eccentric band of freedom fighters, people from different times of history who lost their lives in noble sacrifice. They recruit the reluctant and befuddled Gordon and set off on a wild adventure through the surreal landscapes of purgatory to battle the Despiser–an evil being who now reigns in this seemingly God-abandoned halfway house north of hell and south of heaven. Dealing with shifting reality, annoying monsters, armies of Ragmen and hair-raising car chases across bridges spanning oceans of lava our heroes battle their way to the dark macabre fortress of the Despiser.

Show is free, but there’s an entirely optional suggested donation of $5. There’s a bar too, so you must be 21 and over to attend!

This one’s by friend of the blog and local filmmaker Mike Vogel. The video’s Vimeo page statement: I’ve got a nice view at work. Why not do a timelapse?. I agree: why not?

Tuesday Timbers Tidbits (10/26/2010)

TimbersWas Alex Nimo‘s announcement to the world, via an interview with the Oregonian, that he would quit soccer before playing for a team other than Portland, cleverly connived, or was it as naive as it appears at first blush? Mao asks that question, and The Offside Rules thinks they know the answer already: Alex Nimo Has Just Given RSL License to Fleece Portland for His Services.

USL Portland Timbers legend Byron Alvarez may still have some goals left in him, at least that’s the hope of the Missouri Comets of the Major Indoor Soccer League, who just signed him for the 2010-2011 season.

Now that the first batch of signings is over, and the next batch of USL Timbers signings have been implied (i.e. Futty and Alhassan), Gavin Wilkinson and John Spencer turn their attention to the MLS Expansion Draft. On the day before Thanksgiving they will get to pick first in the 10 round draft, alternating with the Vancouver Whitecaps. Each MLS team can protect 11 players from the draft, and current Generation Adidas players (like Alex Nimo) and Home Grown players are also protected.
