Halloween Weekend in Portland (2010)

October 25, 2010 by Dave Knows 6 Comments

Elder DaveHalloween is not one of favorite holidays.

For one thing I’m an introvert, so generally I don’t like to draw attention to myself. For another, I suck at coming up with good costumes. By way of example, take a gander at the photo to the right, taken a few years ago at one of the rare Halloween parties at which I’ve made an appearance (I’m not sure what was smeared on the camera lens). I’m dressed as a . . . Mormon missionary (not shown in the photo is my backpack, Book of Mormon, and bicycle helmet).

So yeah, I suck at Halloween.

But some people love Halloween, and at Dave Knows Portland we aim to please. So below I have assembled a handful of events and resources for Halloween events in Portland (I’ll update the list throughout the week as more appear):

  • Portland Halloween Parties, Events, Costumes, Contests – PDX Pipeline
  • Weekend picks, Halloween edition – qPDX.com
  • Spotlight: Portland’s Best Trick or Treat Neighborhoods & Halloween Weekend Happenings – Portland On The Cheap
  • Free Events in Portland: October 29-31 – Around the Sun
  • Halloween Party at Hall of Records! (October 30)
  • Horror Happening Calendar – The Shadow Over Portland
  • Night of the Living Ales – Dave Knows Portland

South Waterfront: Ideal for Filmmakers?

October 25, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

South WaterfrontFilmmaker Mike Vogel has found an excellent use for Portland’s infamous South Waterfront District:

The South Waterfront area takes a lot of crap for being a highrise wasteland of condos no one lives in. But if you live in Portland and want to film a scene with a skyscraper environment without the hassles of random people interrupting your shot, it’s a filmmaker’s dream. The very deadness of SoWat makes it ideal for the budgetless director in Portland (ok, me).

You’ve got skyscrapers, busses, the streetcar, the tram, the river. And now there’s even a really cute park. It all feels pretty generic (in a good way). It could be any city.

Read the rest: South Waterfront is for indies

Like Mike I kinda like the South Waterfront. Sure it cost a lot of public money, but what new development doesn’t? I wouldn’t want to live there, but if I was rich I’d buy one of those bargain basement condos now and come back in a decade or two to see what we’ve wrought. I expect South Waterfront will be the boondoggle that blossoms. And in the meantime we have an urban landscape fit for a filmmaker’s dream!

Video: Oregon Iron Works’ Streetcar Venture on MSNBC

October 24, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

The video features lots of Portland streetcar footage, including interviews with President of United Streetcar, Chandra Brown, and Mayor Sam Adams.

And in the video below, also from MSNBC, Portlanders explain why they ride the streetcar.

Look for the related videos listed at the end of the videos above – lots more Portland! (Also viewable at MSNBC: Environmental entrepreneurs: Reviving Streetcars)
