History Pub: Frontier Justice in Oregon, 1850-1997 (25-Oct-2010)

October 24, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Necktie PartiesFrontier Justice in Oregon, 1850-1997 is the theme of the History Pub on Monday, October 25 2010 at the Kennedy School Theater (5736 NE 33rd).

Drawing from the wealth of photographs and information discovered while researching her books, Necktie Parties and Murder, Morality and Madness, Diane Goeres-Gardner will present a dark but lively program fit for Halloween, about early-day justice in Oregon, from the first legal execution in 1850 and ending in 1997, when the last man was executed in Oregon. “Frontier Justice” uses individual cases to explore Oregon’s early history of legal incarceration and execution. Included are historical firsts: use of fingerprints, legal recycling, and use of electricity at an execution. Rare photos and discussion of two pioneering Portland institutions, the 1857 Oregon Penitentiary and the 1861 Hawthorne Insane Asylum, will be featured.

History Pub is a free event, but organizers ask you to bring a canned good donation for the Oregon Food Bank. The presentation goes from 7pm until 9pm, and all ages are welcome.

Night of the Living Ales 2010The 1st Annual 28th Street Night of the Living Ales Pub Crawl takes place on Halloween, October 31, 2010.

Night of the Living Ales offers a halloween event for adults who want to have a good time without the hoopla of various gigantic parties/shows in PDX. NotLA also has something for the discerning beer geeks of Beervana with special rare and even exclusive beers from some of Oregon’s best breweries like Upright Brewing, Double Mountain Brewing and Ninkasi Brewing plus a beer made by event organizers specifically for the crawl that will likely only be on tap Halloween, a 10 gallon batch of Peanut Butter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout!

The crawl kicks off at Migration Brewing (2828 NE Glisan) at 8pm, where four different barrels of Upright Brewing‘s dark rye beer with chocolate and spices will be featured.

The next stop, at 9pm is Spints Alehouse (401 NE 28th), featuring Double Mountain‘s Bonne Idee Avec Kriek, a saison/sour cherry beer!

Timbers Army favorite Beulahland (118 NE 28th) takes over at 10pm with Ninkasi’s Oak-aged Kraken.

And at 11pm, Coalition Brewing (2724) treats Night of the Living Ales revelers with their Peanut Butter and Chocolate Oatmeal Stout and Cascadian Citra hopped Dark Ale!

The Beer Goddess, Lisa Morrison of Beer O’ Clock, will be your guide on the pub crawl. Costume contests, each with a different theme, will occur at each stop, and of course there will be swag and happy hour specials! A wristband sets you back a mere $5, and is available at each of the participating bars, or via Paypal (at $5.50) on the Night of the Living Ales website.

Back Fence PDXOne of the highlights of the September 22 2010 Back Fence PDX was Portland fashion designer Adam Arnold‘s story of a childhood obsession which culminated with a trip to Japan with his grandmother. He picks up the story upon their arrival in the video below:

The World’s First “Transit Appliance” from Streetfilms on Vimeo.

Chris Smith of Portland Transport brought a couple homebrewed Transit Appliances to Rail~Volution this week. He thoroughly explains the device in the video above. Like him, I would love to see something like this at cafes and bars throughout the city!

Read more about the device at Portland Transport and Bike Portland.
