Portland Timbers Roundup (10/22/2010)

Timbers ArmyThe Third Saturday is upon us! Celebrate the end of the Timbers’ time in the lower divisions Saturday, October 23 with the Timbers Army at the Farewell and Good Riddance USL Extravaganza at Beulahland (118 NE 28th), from 7pm until closing.

Your 107st membership gets you happy hour (i.e. $3.25 micros, $2.00 PBRs and $1 off food orders) all night!

TimbersPortland Timbers Sign First MLS Players by me, at Dave Knows Portland!

The Portland Timbers provided a surprise today at the press conference introducing the first four signings to the 2011 MLS Timbers roster: English forward Eddie Johnson. Johnson played this past season for the Austin Aztex, where he scored 14 goals in the regular season, finishing one spot behind Portland’s Ryan Pore in the race for the Golden Boot. Timbers Insider: Expansion draft scheduled for Nov. 24 by Geoffrey C. Arnold at The Oregonian

The Portland Timbers’ next move in the player acquisition market will be revealed when they make the first selection in the Major League Soccer expansion draft, scheduled for Nov. 24.

Portland will choose first in the draft, with the Timbers and fellow expansion team Vancouver Whitecaps alternating selections. The Timbers and Whitecaps will each select 10 players in the 10-round draft. [more]

Following a week-long vote at www.PortlandTimbers.com, fans have selected midfielder Ryan Pore’s game-winning goal against the Puerto Rico Islanders at PGE Park on Sept. 2, 2010, as the Timbers 2010 Goal of the Year. [more]

The awards and accolades continue to roll in for Portland forward Ryan Pore.

The high-scoring Pore was named as the USSF Division 2 Pro League’s most valuable player Thursday, just one day after he was recognized as the league’s scoring champion. Pore and new teammate Eddie Johnson were named to league’s Best IX team. [more]

Free kicks: MLS attendance competitive with some NBA teams by Geoffrey C. Arnold at The Oregonian

As Major League Soccer enters its final regular season games this weekend, the league is reporting increased attendance for the season.

In fact, the attendance in some cities with MLS teams is better than their counterpart NBA teams. Half of the league’s 16 teams are averaging at least 15,000 fans a game, which is similar to some of the NBA’s teams. [more]

Night Owl Record Show Fall 2010

Night Owl Record Show Fall 2010The Fall 2010 Night Owl Record Show takes place this Saturday, October 23 from 5pm until 9pm at the Portland Eagles Lodge (4904 SE Hawthorne).

Portland’s Night Owl Record Show is the nation’s first night time record show. Twice a year since October of 2003 music fans and record fiends from Portland, the Pacific Northwest and as far away as Florida, New York and Japan, have gathered for a funky time buying, selling and trading records. The Eagles provide food, drink and pool to keep things from getting boring.

21 and over only. Admission is $2 (or $15 for the early bird entrance). Part of the proceeds benefits KBOO, Portland’s community radio station.

Hall of RecordsAnd on Friday, October 22 over at 3342 SE Belmont, Hall of Records, the boutique vinyl shop, cafe & bar specializing in soul, funk, jazz, latin, hip hop, deep funk and rare groove records [and one of our fantabulous advertisers!], is throwing a Night Before the Night Owl Party! The celebration features $2 PBRs and $3 Natian Honey Red Drafts from 8pm until closing, and all Night Owl Vendors receive a special 1/2 price discount on all sandwiches [which are all fantastic!]. Hall of Records will also be selling records at the Night Owl Record Show on Saturday night.

Great American Distillers FestivalGreat American Distillers Festival 2010

The 2010 Great American Distillers Festival takes place Saturday and Sunday, October 23 and 24 2010 at the Tiffany Center (1410 SW Morrison), 11am until 7pm both days.

Small distillers from around the country come to offer samples of spirits and share schwag in the form of buttons, stickers, and brochures. Once again the festival also features the Portland Cocktail Invitational, a competition sponsored by the Oregon Bartenders Guild and Imbibe Magazine. Two dozen star bartenders from across the country compete for the $1000 grand prize. [more]

Wonder Woman Day V 2010Celebrate Wonder Woman Day V this Sunday, October 24 2010 at Excalibur Comics (2444 SE Hawthorne).

This free heroic charity event takes place during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and is a benefit for Portland’s Bradley Angle organization, Raphael House, and other domestic violence programs.

Again this year, it’s official; Mayor Sam Adams has declared Sunday to be Wonder Woman Day in Portland!

From noon until 6pm, fans can take photos with Real Live Super-Heroes & Heroines, participate in raffles and a silent auction, and meet famous comic book artists. An Outdoor Block Party features Special Super-Hero & Sci-Fi Guests.
