Time Machine: Portland Newspaper Websites In The Year 2000

December 3, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Inspired by a post at blogTO, What Toronto-based newspaper websites looked like a decade ago, I thought it’d be amusing to see what Portland-based newspaper websites looked like in the year 2000.

OregonLive.com 5-December-2000
OregonLive.com, December 5 2000

I’ve joked that the OregonLive.com website hasn’t been updated since 1997, but actually, it has. We can easily confirm this, thanks to the Internet Archive: Wayback Machine.

The image above is a snapshot of what the OregonLive.com homepage looked like almost exactly 10 years ago, on December 5, 2000.

Willamette Week 4-December-2000

Willamette Week on December 4, 2000

Actually the Willamette Week, on December 4 2000 sported a splash screen. The page above is what you would see if you clicked on one of the splash screen links, and then clicked on the “home” image link on the top banner on the next page. User experience design has come a long way in the intervening years.

Portland Mercury 16-August-2000
Portland Mercury, August 15 2000

The Portland Mercury was relatively uncluttered on August 15 2000. Just as irreverent then as today though.

The PortlandTribune.com, in 2000, had begun publishing, but had a website “Under Construction”.

The old timers amongst you may remember the alternative weekly PDXS: The Pulse of Portland. The best I could find was this slick 1997 splash screen:

Portland Timbers Roundup (3-December-2010)

December 3, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersNot much in the way of Timbers news this week, but stay tuned. I’ll be in attendance at the kit unveiling on Thursday, and the retail store opening (see below) should prompt some opinionators.

We Are Timbers: Eugénie by Brian Costello at PortlandTimbers.com

You’ve seen them. Big. Bold. Towering over the urban landscape with some as high as seven stories tall.
They are portraits of photographers, brewers, coaches, men, women, kids.
They are portraits of fans.

Eugénie Frerichs is a photographer and art director at uber-cool local clothing company Nau. Moving here as a one-year old from Colorado, Eugénie grew up in Portland but has traveled throughout the world. And yet, somehow, the pull of the city always brings her back. A true Portlander, she loves her soccer. [more]

Better Know a Timber – Adam Moffat by paulsepp at Dropping Timber

John Spencer looked to a fellow Scot, when he picked up Adam John William Moffat in the expansion draft. A member of the Crew since 2007, he has played in 44 matches and started in 36 of those. In his tenure with the Crew he scored five goals, recorded one assist and played in some big games helping the Crew win two Supporters Shields and the 2008 MLS Cup. [more]

A Toast To Repeal Day 2010

December 2, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Headline from the Oregonian, Dec 5 1933Sunday, December 5 2010 marks the 77th anniversary of Repeal Day, the day in 1933 when three quarters of the states ratified the 21st Amendment to the Constitution and thus repealed the federal prohibition on the sale, manufacture, and consumption of alcoholic beverages!

Every red-blooded American is obligated to toast to our brewers, vintners, distillers, distributors, publicans, bartenders, waitrons, and friends on this anniversary. And a toast is best performed amongst friends, so head to to your local drinking establishment or throw a cocktail party!

In 2008, the 75th anniversary Repeal Day, several local bars and restaurants were swept up in the celebration, this year not so much. However, the Teardrop Lounge (1015 NW Everett) continues with the tradition by throwing their annual Repeal Day 2010 bash (It’s very important to read the rest of the announcement at the Teardrop Lounge event page – a password is required to enter the party!)

And a few blocks away the Irving Street Kitchen is hosting a Repeal Day Industry Party from 4 to 6pm on Sunday, December 5 2010, with free food and drinks for industry people!!!

For more information about my favorite secular holiday, visit RepealDay.org, a site created by local bartending and mixology blogger Jeffrey Mogenthaler, one of the first individuals to propose treating the anniversary as a holiday.

December 2-5: Holiday Ales, ScanFair, Repeal Day, and More!

December 2, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

There’s a lot going on this weekend, so choose wisely. In addition to the events featured below some ongoing options include visiting the Pittock Mansion for A Northwest Christmas: The Natural Beauty and Bounty of Oregon, and the zoo for Zoolights. Also this is a good time to visit the Architectural Heritage Center, which is offering free admission throughout December. My plan is the hit up the Ale Festival on Friday, the ScanFair and Zoolights on Saturday, and then glide through Sunday with no obligations.

The 2010 Portland Holiday Ale Festival takes place December 1 through 5 at the usual place – Pioneer Courthouse Square.
