Christmas Ship Parade 2010

December 7, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Christmas Ship ParadeNow in its 56th year, the Christmas Ship Parade begins its run on Thursday, December 9 2010, with regularly scheduled runs through December 21.

The Christmas Ship Parade started in 1954 with one lone sailboat from Portland Yacht Club. Bows of green with some ribbon where tied along the rails and it paraded on the rivers. The next year the parade started to grow. Today, The Christmas Ship Fleet averages about 55 to 60 boats between the Columbia and Willamette River fleets. Things have changed from the first lone ship. Now the displays are brightly lit and can be seen from bank to bank on each river.

Visit the website for more information, including the Columbia River and the Willamette River schedules, which indicate both the time and the best viewing locations.

Video Interlude: Radius

RADIUS from Pander Brothers on Vimeo.

Radius is a short film by the Pander Brothers that, according to the Vimeo page, was originally shot on 16mm, but has been remastered and given a soundtrack by Auditory Sculpture. It’s a very curious cold war era film (there are glimpses of the White Stag sign).

Conceived and filmed in the final years of the Cold War, RADIUS uses bold architectural abstraction to frame Portland’s Burnside Bridge as it opens and gives way to a lethal military vessel that passes through its gates. The location was chosen for its infamous designation as the city’s “ground zero”, which was believed to be the target site of a potential Soviet nuclear ballistic missile attack.

Channing Frye Still Loves Portland

December 7, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Channing FryeJose Romero, field reporter for SB Nation Arizona, upon the occasion of a road game in Portland, talks to the Phoenix Suns’ Channing Frye, to find out what it is he likes about Portland.

Channing makes his off season home in Portland, and he sounds like a New York Times reporter the way he heaps praises upon Stumptown:

“I think it’s the people, the community. Everything is just very nonchalant. People are real. The community is just beautiful, I think the people really take care of their city and I think everything that I like is there,” Frye said. “I get made fun of a lot… but I think it’s the best place to live in the summertime.”

He continues . . .

“Nothing’s a hassle in Portland. Never any traffic, really. Going in the river, it’s clean, and I think (the city’s) got nice cultural diversity,” he said. “I thought the city was full of hippies and oats, and now I’m one of those hippies and oat-eaters.”

Job Finding Resources in Portland

December 7, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Looking for a job in Portland, Oregon? Photographer Rachel Hadiashar, who with her husband Ali recently settled in Portland, developed a personal batch process for job finding that just might be useful to other job seekers.

– once a week visit bookmarked job boards at local colleges and universities
– subscribe to RSS feeds or emails lists at college and university job sites so openings would be automatically brought to my attention
– once every two days go through all RSS feeds and twitter streams to star or favorite interesting opportunities
– when blessed with time and in the right mood, re-visit starred listings and make a second cut to decide which openings to pursue

But I think job seekers will find most useful the exhaustive list of Portland, Oregon job finding resources Rachel has assembled. The list includes links to local university and college job sites, general job listing sites, and a comprehensive list of useful Twitterers and Twitter lists for Portland job searching. Find these at Rachel’s blog, refresh, renew explore: How to Find a Job in Portland, Oregon.

TimbersOur first stop this Tuesday is the Portland Timbers website where we learn about yet another draft, the 2010 MLS Re-Entry draft. Stage 1 takes place on Wednesday, December 8, followed on Wednesday, December 15 with Stage 2. All MLS clubs, including Portland and Vancouver have picks. In both stages Vancouver picks 17th and Portland picks 18th. If you’re fascinated with this stuff, the details are available. If you just want to know what options Portland has, read mao’s analysis.

The other Timbers events this week are the kit unveiling, which takes place on Thursday, and the opening of the Portland Timbers Downtown Team Store on Friday, the 10th.

Timbers Army HoodieMeanwhile the official team online store is already open, as is the Timbers Army online store. From the latter, check out the new limited edition options, including the kick ass hoodie pictured to the right.

Dropping Timber‘s ongoing Better Know a Timber series introduces us this week to Peter Lowry, the attacking midfielder the Timbers plucked from the Chicago Fire in the expansion draft.

In The Oregonian Geoffrey C. Arnold writes about two recent Timbers acquisitions, Jeremy Hall and Rodney Wallace, who won the national championship with Maryland in 2008. Here’s hoping their college era chemistry translates to the MLS Timbers.

And at OregonLive Kip Kesgard considers this a historic week.

Former Timber Mandjou Keita has joined Pune Football Club of India for the 2010-2011 season.

And finally, there’s a newish Timbers blog in town worth checking out: Chopping Timbers: Opinionated Portland Timbers News. I imagine it will be the first of many new Timbers related sites to sprout up as the MLS Timbers kick off their first season in 2011.
