February 21, 1887: Oregon Passes Country’s First Labor Day Legislation

February 21, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Union Yes

Though the idea of a Labor Day holiday did not originate here, Oregon passed on February 21, 1887 the first legislation in the country to officially recognize the “workingman’s holiday.”

Labor Day had been first celebrated five years earlier, on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City. The Central Labor Union urged other labor organizations to recognize the holiday, which was moved to the first Monday in September in 1884. Labor Day gained acceptance around the country with the growth of the labor movement.

In 1894 the United States Congress passed an act declaring Labor Day a legal holiday nationwide.

“No Pity” and “We Are Timbers” Bootlegs

February 21, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

No Pity! By Heather (Mile73.com)The bootlegging began a few weeks ago with a couple expertly drawn contributions by Portland comic artist Mike Russell (aka @CulturePulp).

More (good natured) hand drawn spoofs of the Timbers’ No Pity campaign and We Are Timbers fan shoot started popping up on Twitter. Radio personality Fat Boy Roberts, of Cort and Fatboy fame, contributed one. Food writer and photographer Allison Jones threw her hat into the ring.

Heather even added a contribution featuring the both of us: Because the Cool Kids Are Doing It.

And now legendary Portland Timbers fan and freelance photographer Steven Lenhart (better known as Nevets) has started a curated collection of the No Pity bootlegs at his new blog, Soccer Watcher. Take a gander:
