Saison Festival (7-May-2011)

Saison Festival 2011 Cascade Brewing presents this year’s Saison Festival on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at the Cascade Brewing Barrel House (939 SE Belmont) from noon until 10pm.

We’ve got 18 Saison ales and ciders lined up from across the nation, including Block 15 (Hatter’s Riddle), Boulevard (Tank 7), Brasserie Dupont (Saison Dupont), Breakside (Breakside Amarillo Saison), Buckman Village (La Petite Morte Dark Saison), Cascade (Saison de la Maison, Saison Fume, Saison Minuit & Saison 10), Double Mountain (Bon Idee Vintage), Green Dragon Project (Thai-son), Oakshire (Frederic’s Lost Arm), Stillwater Artisan (Existent, Cellar Door & Stateside Saison), The Bruery (Saison de Lente), Two Rivers Cider (Cider Saison) & Upright (#5 Hoppy Saison).

Featuring live music by Black Lodge and Left Coast Country, this beer fest is free to enter! To sample bring a standard issue 14 oz plastic festival mug from your vast beer-fest collection (no glass!), or purchase a Cascade Brewing tasting mug for $3. Four ounce samples are $1 and a full mug sets you back $4 (some kegs may require double-tokens).

Join the Pine State Fellas at the NE location (2204 NE Alberta) for the Pine State Biscuit Biscuit Birthday Blowout on Saturday, May 7, 2011 starting at 2pm.

Live music will be provided by the Wheeler City Ramblers, Honey Wars, and Dolorean; Hopworks and Fort George will be pouring from the guest taps and cocktails will feature House Spirits spirits. And you won’t want to miss the biscuit eating contest! Wind down the evening on the patio where Wet Hot American Summer and Cannonball Run will be shown.

$25 covers your food and drink and entertainment. 20% of proceeds will be split 50/50 between Sisters of the Road and Mercy Corps!

Match Day (3-May-2011): Portland Timbers vs. San Jose Earthquakes

The Portland Timbers face the San Jose Earthquakes tonight, May 3, 2011, in a qualifying match for the 98th Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. The rivalry between these two teams goes back to the Timbers’ first year of existence, in 1975!

Kickoff at Jeld-Wen field is 7:30pm – tickets are still available (this match is not included in season tickets packages). There will also be a live webstream at PortlandTimbers.com, and the match will be broadcast on 95.5 The Game.

The Timbers, as you no doubt know, are undefeated at home this year. Tonight’s match will be the second of three home matches in seven days. The team defeated Real Salt Lake 1-0 last Saturday, and this approaching Friday the Philadelphia Union make their first visit to Jeld-Wen Field. Coach Spencer may get creative with the lineup to keep key players fresh. The Earthquakes, having not won a match in the last five tries, should be either inspired or dismayed – desperate in any case – so this should be a very interesting match.

May 3, 1989: Portlandia Officially Declared Portland City Song

Musician Marc C. Miller had long thought Portland needed a song – a la “New York, New York,” “Chicago is My Kind of Town,” or “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” – but he couldn’t come up with a focus until he saw Portland’s new statue (at the time) – Portlandia.

“I felt like writing about Portland through Portlandia’s eyes” (The Oregonian, 14-February-1987).

PORTLANDIA

Old town, downtown, fountains and lights,
The Willamette reflecting our city at night
From bridges, nightspots in neighborhoods, too.

After a little lobbying and luck he got Mayor Bud Clark and the other members of the City Council to listen, and on May 3, 1989, with the adoption of resolution 34547, the song “Portlandia” was established as the official Portland City Song.

This year’s fest features a VIP section with preferred seating, early admission, a pre-show performance from Here Come Dots, a cocktail, hors d’oeuvres, and door prizes ranging from free passes to future McMenamins events, to an overnight stay for 2 at McMenamin’s Edgefield Hotel. A limited number of VIP tickets are ~~available online~~ ~~for $10~~ sold out!

$10 too rich for your blood? Enter the coloring contest and you might win free VIP passes! Visit the Bagdad Theater, or the Cinco De Lebowski event page at Cascadia.FM to acquire the poster for Cinco De Lebowski. Jazz it up with color, return it to the Bagdad with your name and phone number on the back, and the poster will be displayed in the Bagdad windows facing Hawthorne. If your artful coloring is deemed worthy, you could win free VIP passes.

The doors of the Bagdad (3702 SE Hawthorne) open at 9pm (7:30pm for VIP ticket holders!). Here Come Dots perform live, and the film begins at 11pm. Non-VIP admission is only $3, and you have to be 21 or over.
