May 5, 1945: Japanese Balloon Bomb Kills Six Near Bly, Oregon

May 5, 2011 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

During World War II Japan launched thousands of balloon bombs into the jet stream in hopes that some of their deadly cargoes would reach the U.S. mainland to ignite forest fires, blow up buildings, and kill and terrorize citizens.

Of the thousands launched, a few hundred did reach our shores.

Pastor Archie Mitchell, his wife Elsye, and five Sunday school children were heading up Gearhart Mountain for a picnic on May 5, 1945. It was a pleasant spring day. They pulled over to let Elsye, who was pregnant, get some fresh air. She and the five children wandered a ways from the freeway and found what they may have thought was a weather balloon. In any case they somehow disturbed the mystery payload, and just as Ms. Mitchell shouted towards her husband “Look what I found, dear,” a huge explosion ripped through the forest, killing her and the five children.

May 4, 1923: Benson High School Launches Portland’s First Public Radio Station

May 4, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

KBPSBenson Polytechnic High School radio station KFIF was licensed by the federal government in March 1923 to operate with 200 watts at 834 kilocycles. On May 4, 1923 broadcasting began. The station was Portland’s first public radio station, and only the second radio station run by an educational institution in the country. KBPS is also likely the oldest continuously broadcasting high school radio station in the country.

Renamed KBPS in 1930, the station broadcasts at 1450 AM and is the second oldest radio station still broadcasting in Portland.
