Mr. MoonLong before Bumpity, another puppet show ruled the airwaves in Portland: Mr. Moon.

When 4:30 rolls around every Monday through Friday, you would hear Harry the Heron yell, “Come on gang, it’s time for Mr. Moon”. Over 100,000 youngsters in Oregon and Southwest Washington flocked to their TV sets to follow the fabulous adventures of Mr. Moon and his hilarious puppet crew. Beginning as a radio show in the early 1950s, Mr. Moon became one of the most popular kid shows in Portland.

Behind the Mr. Moon mask was longtime radio disc jockey Ed Leahy. He created the cast of characters from the Mother Goose Rhyme “Hey Diddle Diddle”. Another well-known Portland broadcaster, Art Morey, joined the show as the voice of Harry the Heron and other animal characters.

Mr. Moon debuted on November 16, 1953 one month after KOIN TV went on the air, and just over a year after television came to Portland. The show aired until 1958.

DB Cooper Part OneKick Ass Oregon History is the latest series of podcasts from the enthusiastic historians behind ORHistory.com.

Volume 3 #7 dropped today – DB Cooper Part Two:

In which a we wonder what happened to that man named Dan who jumped out of the thing with that stuff.

Featuring interviews with Galen Cook, author Geoffrey Gray, and Ayn Sandalo Dietrich of the FBI. With the vocal talents of Ally Schutlz.

(Listen to Part One here!)

And don’t forget, this Sunday, November 20, 2011 – you won’t want to miss the Kick Ass Oregon History DB Cooper Night event!

The brains behind this Kick Ass project are the crack hustlers of Oregon History Doug Kenck-Crispin and Andy Lindberg. Doug is a graduate student studying Public History and Pacific Northwest History at PSU, and Andy, though a Portland native, is currently working as an actor in New York City. Doug does most of the research and writing for the podcasts with input from Andy, who voices the broadcasts with a thespian’s flair.

With the Kick Ass Oregon History podcast they plan to cover just the good stuff: Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll and Earth Shattering, Devastating Destruction.

Ultimately, our goal is to take Oregon History out of the hallowed halls of the academy, get folks excited and enthused about this shared history, and get them out into the state, digging it and experiencing it. Get them to embrace it, and get their boots muddy in the process. It’s all OUR History; nobody owns it.

Visit ORHistory.com and stay tuned to @Oregon_History on Twitter for further details on specific episodes and the series. Catch up on missed episodes at the Kick Ass Oregon History archives.

World Toilet Day (19-November-2011)

November 15, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

2012 World Toilet Day info here!

World Toilet Day 2011World Toilet Day 2011, an annual celebration of the importance of sanitation to raise global awareness of the struggle 2.6 billion face every day without access to proper, clean sanitation, takes place on Saturday, November 19. Activities are planned throughout the world.

Last year’s celebration in Portland included the Portland Loo unveiling, and though this year’s celebration is perhaps less exciting, it is no less important. Public Hygiene Lets Us Stay Human (PHLUSH), Portland, Oregon’s public restroom advocates, recognizing that Portland’s location in the Cascadia Subduction Zone puts us in considerable risk of a devastating earthquake in our lifetime, has launched a fall emergency preparedness campaign in conjunction with World Toilet Day:

Through information, public workshops and exhibits, Portlanders will reflect on needs and build simple urine separation bucket toilets. Most Americans’ see urine and feces as “waste” rather than as nutrient-rich resources vital to the planet. Disaster preparedness is an appropriate context for putting people at ease with talking about the issues; simple emergency toilets are both important in themselves and an intermediate step toward ecological sanitation and nutrient-cycling.

PHLUSH is working with the Old Town Chinatown Neighborhood Association, Neighbors West Northwest, the Collaborative Design Studio in Emergency Sanitation at the Pacific Northwest College of Art. The Sustainable Sanitation Alliance provides valuable technical resources. The Christchurch Twin No-Mix Emergency Toilet was developed in collaboration with the Compost Loo Team of the New Zealand Permaculture Emergency Response Network Our campaign publicity partner is World Toilet Day.

Visit the World Toilet Day website for more information on the global effort, and visit PHLUSH.org for more information on World Toilet Day , and ongoing, sanitation advocacy.
