MLS Cup Final Viewing (21-Sunday-2010)

November 18, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

MLS Cup 2010The 2010 MLS Cup Final pits FC Dallas against the Colorado Rapids in Toronto. Normally most Portlanders wouldn’t give a rats ass about this match, but next year the Portland Timbers will be playing in the league, so maybe it’s a good idea for us to take a gander at the competition.

And we can, at the MLS Cup Final viewing at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne) on Sunday, November 21. Doors open at 4:30pm, kickoff occurs at 5:30pm. This event is free and open to all ages.

In addition to watching the match, you’ll have a chance to pick up Timbers merchandise (including pre-ordered Sunflower scarves if you didn’t pick them up the night before at the Timbers Army Third Saturday event). 107ist membership cards will be available for pick up at this event too.

Tuesday Timbers Tidbits (15/11/2010)

TimbersPortland Timbers News is hard to come by this week, so bear with me.

Gameday Merchandising will be the retail vendor operator at the stadium soon to be formerly known as PGE Park.

Joe O’Neil writes at the Bleacher Report on why he doesn’t watch MLS. His reason is Brian Dunseth, who I guess is a Fox Soccer Channel commentator? I wouldn’t know because I too don’t watch MLS – what soccer fan has time with all the higher quality leagues around the world? But both Joe O’Neil and I are Portland Timbers season-ticket holders, so we will watch MLS soccer next year. Fortunately at the live event, and at sports bars, you can’t hear the commentators.

107ist107st members [you are one aren’t you?!] received a notice Monday to renew their memberships before Midnight, December 31st 2010. If you’re not yet a member, join now! 107ist is a member-based organization open to anyone who loves soccer, the Timbers, Portland, and, especially, the combination of the three. Members receive special Timbers Army/107st merchandise, pre-sale access to transportation to road games, special members-only events, and lots more. Plus your dues help support the 107ist charitable contributions.

The 2011 107ist board elections are almost here too – if you think you have what it takes to run for office, visit the election page to find out how.

And finally, recently retired (unfortunately due to post-concussion syndrome) MLS player Taylor Twellman has some kind words about the Pacific Northwest:

I really wanted that chance to play in the Pacific Northwest (against the expansion Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps) and see the rivalries being formed there. It is the beginning of something truly, truly special.

Scot RetiresPortland Timbers defender Scot Thompson announced his retirement from professional soccer last night at a special event held at Kell’s Irish Pub in Portland. Scott played for the Timbers from 2004 through 2010, racking up 156 regular-season matches and 12,994 minutes on the field.

Team president and owner Merritt Paulson, joined by technical director and former coach and player Gavin Wilkinson each spoke to the gathered fans, players, and media; praising Scot’s history of hard work, dedication to the team and organization, and his impressive pace on the pitch. They presented Scot with a framed jersey and Scot spoke briefly about how much he’s enjoyed the past seven years as a Timber and finding himself part of the community.
