December 16, 1961: KPFM, Portland’s First FM Stereo Radio Station, Goes on the Air

December 16, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

KPFM program listing in The Oregonian, 16 December 1961KPFM, Portland’s first FM multiplex stereo radio station, and at the time one of only twenty in the country, began broadcasting at noon on Saturday, December 16, 1961 (The Oregonian, 16 December 1961).

The Oregonian explained the new technology:

In its simplest terms, FM stereo is the broadcasting of two signals over one channel from the station. In the FM stereo receiving set, the two different signals are put through a dual amplifier and fed into separate speakers for reconversion into sound.

FM stereo is full compatible and owners of conventional FM sets will hear broadcasts monoaurally just as they always have but will not hear them in stereo.

The first show FM stereo program broadcast was “Introduction to Stereo” with Don Vincent, Art Gilmore and Tom Mercein hosts. It included sound effects, music and commentary. It was followed at 1pm by the album “Victory at Sea,” Vol. III. “Pass in Review,” the sound effects of a parade presented in London’s Phase 4, was scheduled at 3pm.

Cascadia.fm is Dead . . . Long Live Cascadia.fm!

November 12, 2011 by Dave 5 Comments

Cascadia.FMCascadia.fm, the local Robert Wagner-masterminded podcast powerhouse, officially launched just over a year ago. It was preceded by about two years by the not quite so geographically ambitious PDX.fm. And today Robert Wagner has announced that Cascadia.FM has been sold.

It’s with a bit of both trepidation and reluctance that I must announce that on Thursday, November 10th, 2011, Cascadia.fm was sold to an Internet radio start up based in southern California.

The new owners are purchasing the Cascadia.fm name, website and social media assets, and streaming servers and all related software (both proprietary and not). The sale did not include any contracts with any existing Cascadia.fm podcasts or personalities as none exist, nor does the purchaser wish to retain any of the existing programming.

Cascadia.fm as we know it now will be turned off at 5pm on Friday, November 18th, 2011. What this means for individual podcasts has yet to be determined (though Knit Happens and Cort & Fatboy have already assuaged fears), but Wagner has made his own resources available to the podcast hosts, and, he has promised, Portland Sucks will continue.

Visit Cascadia.fm for the answers to many of your questions, and visit RobWagPDX.com for even more clarification, including clues as to what Robert Wagner is working on next.

Suck It™ Gets Sirius XM

January 12, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

Suck It and SiriusSuck It™ Newsletter #02 (sent to Suck It™ Junkies) revealed yesterday that big changes are afoot for Robert Wagner and Sabrina Miller, beloved local internet radio hosts and producers at Cascadia.FM.

At the end of 2010 it was revealed Suck It™ was the subject of a syndication deal with a terrestrial broadcasting company, but that deal has been nixed:

We’re pleased to announce via this newsletter that we’ll be joining the ranks of Sirius XM instead beginning June 1, 2011 and will be providing that network with 4 hours of exclusive content every weekday – that’s 20 full hours for the mathematically challenged – and, unlike many other Sirius XM (ahem) personalities, the kind folks at Sirius have agreed to allow us to continue creating our one hour podcast each day as well.

Holy crap, I can’t imagine doing anything for 5 hours a day, every day, except sleeping, but then Robert and Sabrina have exceptional talent and perseverance, as we’ve seen the past few years on Portland Sucks and Suck It™. Congrats to them. As a fan (and stockholder in Sirius XM!), I’m confident of and excited for their success.

Meanwhile, we can continue listening to Suck It™ weekdays at 9am!

A view from the stands of the Timbers by Stanley Holmes at Sportspress Northwest

Garrett Dittfurth, a board member for the 107ist of the Timbers Army, was not present during those heady NASL days. But he knows they were a good team — they produced three playoff seasons (1975, 1978 and 1981) and found themselves in the 1975 Soccer Bowl. Crowds reaching 20,000 per game were the norm, back in the day. [more]

October 28, 2010 by Dave Leave a Comment

Mao's Football Showmao’s Football Show will broadcast live every Tuesday from 4-5pm on Cascadia.FM, starting on election day, November 2 2010.

First and foremost we chat about the happenings of the Portland Timbers Football Club. We also delve into the international scene, as well as Major League Soccer and northwest football culture. From time to time we discuss the “beautiful game” with in studio guests, guests from other cities, and even the odd international pundit.

The show hosts are two of the most qualified soccer and Portland Timbers experts you’ll find in these parts:

Michael Orr, aka mao, is a prolific soccer blogger. He is the man behind the indispensable Timbers Offside Blog and the cosmopolitan mao’s Football Blog.

Steven Lenhart, along with his brother Jim “Lendog” Lenhart, founded the Timbers Army [no, really!]. He’s a long time football fan, and Portland based photographer.

On Twitter they can be contacted @maofootballshow, and listen in Tuesdays at 4pm on Cascadia.FM!
