December 4-6: Culture, Repeal Day, and Artisan Beer, Food, Wine, and Spirits

December 3, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

The approaching weekend took me by surprise. There are as many worthwhile events as on some of the busiest summer weekends.

Holiday Ale FestivalHoliday Ale Festival

The fest continues its run, all through the weekend, at Pioneer Courthouse Square. The central downtown location means your steps away from transit when the night comes to an end. Though cold and often wet outside, inside the dry tent the beers are big and warming. The Organic Brewers Festival in May is my favorite, but I understand why this festival is tops for many.

Nightmare_100The Cort and Fatboy Midnight Movie

The movie this Friday, December 4th is the Tim Burton classic, The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Feel free to sing along.

The solid mediocrity takes place at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne). Admission is $3 (21 and over only), and arrive early if you want a seat!

ScanFair 2009

scanfair2009Come for the Scandinavian food, crafts, and the 54th crowning of Oregon’s Lucia Queen of Light. Stay for the Pickled Herring Eating Contest at noon Saturday. The Scandinavian Heritage Foundation’s 25th Annual ScanFair takes place this weekend at PSU’s Smith Center.

Visit the website for more details, including the entertainment schedule for both Saturday and Sunday.

A benefit for the Oregon Food Bank, Season’s Eatings is a local artisans food, wine and spirits market that takes place Saturday, December 5th from noon to 5pm at the New Deal Distillery and Tasting Room (1311 SE 9th).

Some of the region’s best chocolates, cheeses, wines, spirits, charcuterie, baked goods, and pasta will be available to sample and to purchase.

Repeal Day
endofpro100Celebrate the anniversary of the end of Prohibition, all day Saturday December 5th . . . anywhere you’d like!

Join me in a toast to our brewers, vintners, distillers, distributors, publicans, bartenders, waitrons, and friends!

The fair is on the 3rd floor of the Smith Memorial Center (1825 SW Broadway). Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, and children under 12 get in free.

The event raises funds for PSU Nordic language classes and the Scandinavian Heritage Foundation, the mission of which is to preserve, communicate and celebrate Scandinavian heritage and culture.

Though primarily a holiday bazaar, we had a great time at last year’s ScanFair.

The highlight was the annual pickled herring eating contest. The winner, Nick Capri, took home as a prize a bottle of Krogstad Aquavit, made by Portland’s House Spirits.

And yes, we have footage:

June 26-28: Organic beer, Scandinavian summer solstice, and the Timbers

June 26, 2009 by Dave Knows 3 Comments

Of course the North American Organic Brewers Festival will be at Overlook Park all weekend long. I’m heading up there immediately after work on Friday – it’s my favorite summer beer festival.

scanportlandmidsummer09Saturday celebrate the summer solstice (a week late) at the 81st annual Scandinavian Midsummer Festival with the Scandinavian Heritage Foundation and The League of Swedish Societies. The details:

Saturday, June 27, 2009
11am-6pm • Raising of the Maypole 1pm
Dancing 6-9pm • Music by Fossegrimen
German American Cultural Center
7901 SE Division Street, Portland, Oregon
Admission: $5 Adults • $3 Children 6-12 • $15 Family

I’ve never been to this festival, but we had so much fun last weekend at the Astoria Scandinavian Midsummer Festival, I’m hoping to be able to check it out. There is a beer garden, after all!

TimbersSunday the Timbers face the Montreal Impact at PGE park. The kick off is at 5pm.

Earlier in the day, at 1pm, the Portland Timbers U-23’s take on the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency at PGE Park. Come to that match, then cross 18th for the bbq and tailgate at the parking lot between SW Taylor and SW Salmon on 18th Ave (behind Cheerful Bullpen). Several Timbers players will be making some appearances to hang out with the fans. For more information check out this thread.

Mile73.comHeather and I spent last weekend in Astoria. We wanted to check out the 2009 Astoria Scandinavian Midsummer Festival, and both of us just happen to adore Astoria.

As usual, Heather has posted an amusing account of our fantastic trip, with photos and videos, at her blog:

2013 Details Here!

17may2009I’m glad I checked out Around The Sun this morning, as earlier this week when I compiled my list of weekend activities I had completely forgotten about Sunday’s Norwegian Constitution Day celebration and parade.

Norway’s most important holiday, “Syttende Mai” (set-na-my), Constitution Day, will be celebrated on Sunday, May 17th right here in Portland, sponsored by Sons of Norway Grieg Lodge at the historic Norse Hall. The holiday marks the adoption of the Norwegian Constitution in 1814, and Norway’s peaceful separation from Sweden in 1905.

Join Sons of Norway Grieg Lodge and the Norwegian community for authentic festivities including a flag parade with marchers in traditional costumes, the Benson High School marching band, even Norwegian Fjord horses decked out for the occasion! Also enjoy a variety of Scandinavian foods, music and activities for kids. Plus, enter to win a roundtrip for two to Scandinavia courtesy of SAS (Scandinavian Airlines), and other wonderful prizes. Admission is free.

The Norse Hall is located at 11th and NE Couch.

Doors open at 1pm doors open; Parade begins at 3pm.

Complete details available here (pdf).
