Holy crap what a weekend – the only thing this weekend lacks is fireworks!

Every September thousands of Vaux’s Swifts come to Portland. After spending their day eating bugs, the Swifts coalesce in Northwest Portland, flying in a giant undulating swirl in the sky above the school. Around sunset the swirl gets more compact, like a ground pepper tornado, and begins disappearing, measure by measure, down the chimney. On the lawn below hundreds of Portlanders stare mesmerized at the sky, from the comfort of lawn chairs and blankets. Boos erupt when opportunistic Peregrine falcons get lucky. [more]

Cascadia Match Day: Portland Timbers vs. Vancouver Whitecaps (25-August-2012)

August 25, 2012 by Dave Leave a Comment

Portland TimbersThe Portland Timbers (10-9-7) play host to the Vancouver Whitecaps (5-13-6) at Jeld-Wen Field today, August 25, 2012, at 7:30 p.m.

The match will be broadcast live on ROOT Sports, 750 AM The Game, and La Pantera 940 AM.

The only bright spot for the Timbers this season is that they sit atop the Cascadia Cup standings – tied with Seattle . . . a good result against Vancouver today will put them back in the driver’s seat . . .

Vancouver has improved impressively in their second year, and currently sit in the last Western Conference playoff spot, tied with LA Galaxy in points.

Match Day: Portland Timbers vs. Chivas USA (28-June-2012)

July 28, 2012 by Dave 1 Comment

Portland TimbersThe Portland Timbers (5-11-4) kick off against Chivas USA (6-8-5) at Jeld-Wen Field tonight at 8 p.m.

The match will be broadcast live on Root Sports, 750 AM The Game, and La Pantera 940 AM.

The Timbers’ 2012 season is a tale of woe. Chivas were the cellar dwellers when these teams met in April at Jeld-Wen Field – and Chivas came away with a 2-1 victory. A week and a half ago the Timbers, who are now the cellar dwellers in this equation, suffered a 1-0 loss to Chivas in LA.

Can the Timbers make a decent show of it today? Perhaps they’ll pull out a win in this match, but in my view the season is unsalvageable – let’s play the kids, and seriously, haven’t we had enough of Gavin?

Cascadia Match Day: Portland Timbers vs. Seattle Sounders (24-June-2012)

June 24, 2012 by Dave Leave a Comment

Portland TimbersThe Portland Timbers (3-6-4) play host to Cascadian rivals, Seattle Sounders (7-4-4), at Jeld-Wen Field today at 2 p.m.

The match will be broadcast live on ESPN, 750 AM The Game, and La Pantera 940 AM.

Hard to believe, but the Timbers are undefeated in league play at Jeld-Wen field since April 7 – with two wins and two draws. Despite the team’s often miserable play this season (the defense has occasionally been remarkable, but on offense the Timbers have yet to find anything that works), they’ve only lost twice at home in 2012. It would be in the team’s best interest (well, John Spencer’s at least) to play their best match of the season this afternoon.

Draws all around so far this year in the Cascadia Cup competition – a win in this match for either team puts them in the cup lead. The Timbers are coming off a frustrating loss to the LA Galaxy last weekend, while a possibly tired Seattle got spanked last week 4-1 in Montreal, and drew with KC 1-1 on Wednesday.
