Dave Knows Portland, Google Currents Edition

December 10, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Dave Knows Portland on Google CurrentsSmart phone and tablet computer users have a new, slick, way to read this blog: on Google Currents.

Recently introduced, Google Currents is a new application for Android devices, iPads and iPhones that lets you explore online magazines and other content with the swipe of a finger.

Users can navigate to the standard Dave Knows Portland website through the app, and it actually looks pretty darn good, but I’ve set up a new edition of Dave Knows Portland, customized for Google Currents.

My blog’s content translates pretty well to the Google Currents worldview, and I will be enhancing the edition as I get more experience with it. Leave a comment below if you have any requests or recommendations (e.g. a particular blog category you would like to see as its own section).

Google Currents is now available for download in Android Market and the Apple App Store. It’s free!

Portland Poutine Turns 2!

October 18, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Foster Burger PoutineFrench fries. Cheese curds. Gravy. We have much to learn from Canada.

Two years ago Heather and I launched Portland Poutine. The site is our homage to Portland versions of Canada’s curious culinary treat, poutine.

In the past year we’ve discovered, and reviewed, several new poutines. Most recently we stopped in at Foster Burger to try a couple poutines – the regular menu now features six different varieties! Last February, we finally made it to Gravy during a weekday lunch hour to try their gravy fries – which are not on the weekend brunch menu. In November we were delighted to discover that the new Hawthorne Hophouse offered poutine with the tastiest vegetarian gravy yet.

And stay tuned! Several poutine purveyors are on our list, including Bunk Bar‘s Fries w/ Debris Gravy and Bunk Cheese, and the Gravy cheese fries with italian pork sausage gravy at the Sunshine Tavern. Whenever a new bar or restaurant opens in Portland my first query is whether or not they offer poutine.

Thank you for reading, and please consider offering your own reviews – we accept contributions!

TriMet Launches New Site: What Makes This Place Great?

October 4, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

What Makes This Place Great?TriMet has just launched a new site dedicated to the people, places and things that make our region unusually wonderful: What Makes This Place Great?

What Makes This Place Great is an online collection of stories about the people, places and things that make the Portland region wonderful. It’s sponsored by TriMet with the intent of celebrating and sharing all the things – big and little – that make us happy we live here.

So it’s kinda like the site TriMet Diaries [of which I am an editor] . . . but only the heartwarming stories, and not exclusively about transit. It’s also got elements of I Live Here: PDX.

Go check it out: What Makes This Place Great?

Match Day (21-September-2011): Portland Timbers vs. San Jose Earthquakes

September 21, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Portland TimbersThe Portland Timbers (10-12-6) return to Jeld-Wen Field today to take on the San Jose Earthquakes (6-11-11).

Portland is in excellent form of late, especially on the defensive end, with three shutouts in a row. Still on the cusp (at the moment, the wrong side of it) of a playoff position, a win tonight will only do them favors. San Jose are not in particularly good form (record last five: L-L-T-W-L), but are always dangerous with scorer Chris Wondolowski, who has already garnered 10 goals this season on 81 shots.

The match kicks off at 7:30pm, and will be broadcast on KPTV and estrellaTV 8.3. Listen to the game on 750 AM The Game and La Pantera 940 AM.

Match Day (16-September-2011): Portland Timbers vs. New England Revolution

September 16, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Portland TimbersA week after a hard fought draw at Philadelphia the Portland Timbers (9-12-6) return to Jeld-Wen Field today to take on the New England Revolution (5-11-12).

Portland is in relatively good form, winning the two matches previous, both at home. With a win today, the Timbers continue their fight for a playoff spot, but they’ll still need good results on the road to get there. (Fortunately the following match is also at Jeld-Wen field, Wednesday, when San Jose visit.)

The match kicks off at 8pm, and will be broadcast on FOX Soccer. Listen to the game on 750 AM The Game and La Pantera 940 AM.
