August 21, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

You guys, we made a t-shirt!

I Love Portland t-shirt

By we, I mean my lovely wife Heather created the design and our friends at Astoria Screen Printing printed the shirts.

And we’re selling this limited run (we only have two dozen) for cheap – $18 each (plus $3 shipping).

The Port and Company shirts are heavyweight (6.1 ounce) 100% cotton (preshrunk) in Dill Green. The graphic is dark green – the proof above is a pretty darn good representation of the final product.

To order, select your size below and click Buy Now (you can change quantities on the next screen) – thanks for supporting Dave Knows Portland!

SOLD OUT!

I hearty thanks to all the buyers – new design coming soon!

Dave Knows Turns 4!

June 22, 2011 by Dave Knows 4 Comments

Dave Knows Turns 4 - rocking the birthday hat Unicorn-style!Dave Knows Portland was launched four years ago today – that was one thousand, nine hundred, and thirteen posts ago!

That first post was about beer, which was a harbinger of things to come – the most popular blog post categories over the years (and I’m still not bored of them) are beer, the Timbers, and festival. But I’ve written about everything from eating contests to Canada too. A few categories have actually spawned their own websites – as long time readers know, I’m obsessed with quite fond of poutine, which I now blog about at Portland Poutine. More recently I launched Portland Soccer Bars and TriMet Diaries.

But ultimately, Dave Knows Portland is my home. Heck, I don’t actually live in Portland right now, but I’m still (healthily?) obsessed with what’s going in Portland – both to benefit you, my dear reader, and myself – for I’m still spending a lot of time in Portland (almost every other weekend it seems).

But ultimately on the occasion of the fourth birthday of this blog, I would like to thank you – for making it worth writing.

Thanks for reading, commenting, linking, and lurking – there’d be no point without you!

Hawthorne Boulevard: “Way Too Much Portland”

June 18, 2011 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Way Too Much PortlandThough the corner of Southeast 37th and Hawthorne is, fortunately, not anywhere near representative of Portland as a whole, it does provide spectacular people watching opportunities.

An anonymous individual (who evidence suggests may live above the Peet’s Coffee on said corner) has noted this preponderance of peculiarity and started a photo blog to spotlight the weird people and happenings:

  • Way Too Much Portland

I highly recommend a visit. You can also submit your own photos of crimes against fashion, hair, music, and the olfactory organs of passersby.

Urban Archaeology in SW Portland

May 19, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Burlingame Fred Meyer (Photo by Samuel John Klein)The Burlingame Fred Meyer (7555 SW Barbur), the oldest store in the chain that is still operating, is undergoing renovations and will be closed until September. The renovation work, ZehnKatzen Times blogger and culture vulture Samuel John Klein notes, has revealed some clues to the building’s design past:

Naturally, having the outside off the way it is, the building has had its skin removed; we’re looking at the bones. It’s more interesting than I thought it would be. For instance, in the above photo, notice the slanting-out faces of the vertical supports. They have details on, some grooves in the masonry that add visual interest, and there are mansard-style caps on each of them.

See more photos and read more of Samuel’s thoughts and comments on the building and the vintage sign (which will be retained post-renovation) in his post: Urban Archaeology at the Burlingame Fred Meyer.
