Dave Knows on I Live Here PDX!

April 22, 2011 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

Me on I Live Here PDX!I Live Here: PDX was created by Portlanders Sara Gray and Erin as a love letter to our fair city.

I Live Here: PDX is a love letter to Portland and an anthology of its residents, neighborhoods and moods. The idea was inspired by a similar project in San Francisco. As native Portlanders who’ve chosen to make our lives here, we want to be a part of celebrating the city we live in and exploring how others live in it.

And today’s my turn! If you have any interest at all, go check out my intriguing answers to questions such as How did you land in Portland? and What was the last thing you ate at a food cart? And see photos of the cool vintage bicycle I ride a couple times a year!

I submitted my answers before I gave notice at my day job and Heather and I decided to move to Astoria, but my interview answers are otherwise true! 😉

Portland Booze Blogging (2011)

March 21, 2011 by Dave Knows 3 Comments

BoozePortland is home to a burgeoning spirits industry (there’s even a stretch of SE Portland known as Distillery Row), and there are numerous local blogs covering booze, local and otherwise.

Since I compiled my list of Portland booze blogs last year I’ve become aware of several others, and more have been born, so I figure an update is due.

Drink Spirits

Dedicated to helping you figure out what to drink next, the blog’s primary contributer is Portland writer Geoff Kleinman (also the man behind On Portland). As he notes on the about page, Drink Spirits is a spirit ‘agnostic’ site. All categories of spirits are considered and reviewed.

Jeffrey Morgenthaler

Writer and drinker Jeffrey Morgenthaler writes about bartending and mixology from Portland, Oregon. He reviews products, recommends books, and shares recipes and advice.

Tasty Libations

Amateur cocktail enthusiast Sylvan Thompson and avid cocktail taster Joy Keen produce this Portland spirits and cocktail blog. Their liquor cabinet puts all but the best-stocked bars to shame!

Liquidity Preference

This is the entertaining cocktails, coffee, and commentary blog of Portland based freelance writer, barista, mixologist and magician Jacob Grier. He writes mostly about cocktails and coffee, but also on libertarianism.

Cocktailia

This blog by Kenn Wilson promises classic cocktails, bar reviews, events, and more – and it delivers. A highlight is his cocktail recipes.

Imbibe Unfiltered

Imbibe is a Portland based magazine covering Liquid Culture. The blog is not Portland, nor booze-centric, but it does cover the local booze scene when warranted.

The Boozeniks

A couple of lively lushes who blog about craft distillery news, cocktail recipes and bottle reviews, from Portland, Oregon.

Bigscotty Drinks

If it’s a beverage, Scott Rogers will try it and review it. Though tea, coffee, etc. make appearances, spirits and cocktails are are major focus of the blog.

Bon Viveur

Brandon Wise, libation technician and Irving Street Kitchen‘s presiding barman, drops knowledge and shares stories of the bartenders life.

Bar Pilot

A Portland Monthly Magazine blog penned by John Chandler, who has developed an appreciation for a properly stirred cocktail, all manner of beer, smoky single malt scotch, and the odd moment of clarity.

Cocktail Werkshop

Artist and bartender Chris Churilla documents his cocktail and spirits research findings. His findings include recipes, events, and cocktail ingredients!

Colonel Tiki’s Drinks

Tiki fanatic Craig Hermann shares drink recipes, liquor reviews, Polynesian Pop discussions, chest thumping and proclamations.

My Life on the Rocks

Bartender, writer, and whisky enthusiast Lance Mayhew shares stories of his travels and reviews.

Daily Blender

Though mostly a food business blog, Daily Blender has a beer, wine, and spirits category and notably features the writing of Irving Street Kitchen‘s presiding barman, Brandon Wise.

Portland Spirits Examiner

Wine and spirit enthusiast Hoke Harden shares his expertise, experiences, and reviews.

No doubt this list is incomplete (though I’ve intentionally left off a few blogs that haven’t been updated for years) – let me know in the comments what I’ve missed and I’ll add it to the list!

The Oregonian: Heather Finds Love, Portland-Style

February 10, 2011 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

Heather and meMy wife Heather (who writes at Mile73.com!) spoke to journalist Jennifer Willis recently about finding love in Portland. The article was just published!

Is finding love in Portland a breeze, or is this city a black hole of dating?

For Heather Strom, finding love couldn’t have been easier.

“I came to Portland without a job, without knowing anybody, without having a place to live,” says Strom, who moved to the city in January 2008. “I didn’t know a soul.”

Portland Filmmaker Mike Vogel on the Blog Method of Film Distribution

February 7, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

The Waiting ListThe rise of the internet and the breakneck speed of technological innovation have made it much easier for artists of all stripes to show their work to the world. But as artists of all eras have discovered, making a buck from their art is difficult if not well nigh impossible.

Local filmmaker, and friend of the blog, Mike Vogel has been contemplating how to make money, even a little bit, from nano-budget filmmaking. He’s come up with a few ideas:

I started to think about how I watch movies: Netflix (declined me) or Hulu (declined me) or YouTube (de– wait, I’ve got movies on YouTube). YouTube is going to be around longer than Neoflix, IndieFlix, hell I’d even say longer than MOVIE THEATERS. So I uploaded my entire feature to YouTube (google how to do this if you didn’t know you could).

Read the rest at MikeVogel.com: The Blog Model of Film Distribution.

Mike blogs at MikeVogel.com and tweets too: @FrontAve. Check out his films at FrontAve.com. Watch The Waiting List and preview Did You Kiss Anyone?, which is currently in production!

Fertile Ground, Tonya Jone Miller’s Threads, and a Ticket Giveaway!

January 10, 2011 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

Fertile Ground, A City-Wide Festival of New Works features dozens of world premiere projects, staged readings and a myriad of other arts events from the Portland creative community. The 2011 festival runs from January 20th through 30th, with events at venues across the city.

Threads
One such premiere project is the play Threads: The True Story of an Indiana Farm Girl in Viet Nam, written and performed by Portland actress, writer, foodie, and aural courtesan, Tonya Jone Miller.

In August of 1968, a farm girl from rural Indiana stepped off a plane in Saigon, Viet Nam. The people and events that led her there and her subsequent adventures make for an extraordinary tale that is truly stranger than fiction. Based on the life of the playwright’s mother, Threads is a one-woman show illustrating and illuminating how interconnected we human beings are, how we never know the influence a seemingly small action might have, and how in the span of an instant some people can change our lives forever.

Threads runs from January 27 to February 12, 2011 (8pm Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, 6pm Sundays) at The Headwaters Theatre (55 NE Farragut Street #9). Tickets are $15 at the door or online at Hula Hub (Consider a $50 Fertile Ground festival pass if you plan to see two or more shows, but bear in mind he festival pass is valid only for Threads performances 1/27-2/6).
