But stay tuned in 2013 for more blogging!
Dave Knows on Semi-Hiatus
Update: They’re Here!
As many readers know, my wife Heather and I are expecting twins – any day now . . .
In anticipation of this life-changing event, I’m spending less time on Dave Knows Portland (and TriMet Diaries and Portland Poutine), and when the boys are born I probably won’t have a chance to spend quality time on the blog for several weeks to months. In the days or weeks from now until the boys arrive instead of blogging I’m going to be spending my spare time reading books on parenting and child-development, cleaning the house, and helping Heather with anything she needs help with (her belly is huuuge!).
However, I am calling this break a semi-hiatus because I still anticipate posts a couple times a week – in particular I’m going to attempt to produce a weekend events and amusements post once a week at least. There will be moments when both boys will be contentedly sleeping, right?
Thank you for reading and don’t wander too far – by Fall I expect the posting schedule will return to normal here!
While I’m hiatusing, find Portland-area events at these fantastic resources: Around the Sun, Blogging Portland on the Cheap, and Oregon Events at OregonLive.com.
And there’s a good chance I’ll still be relatively active on Twitter – follow me at @DaveKnowsPDX.
Happy Birthday Dear Blog: Dave Knows Portland Turns 5!
Whew, five years ago today I started this blog – with a post about beer of course!
2,746 posts later I’m still not bored with it, so as long as you’re all still paying attention, I think I’ll keep going.
Though I expect beer, the Timbers, and Fairs and Festivals will continue to dominate the coverage here, soon you may see a bit more of an emphasis on family-friendly activities – as many of you know my wife Heather and I are expecting twin boys. When they arrive [soon!], please forgive the inevitably less rigorous posting schedule – I’ve been told babies take up a lot of time . . . But don’t worry, I have no intentions to abandon the blog (nor turn it into a baby blog).
Thanks for reading!
Banana Wonder’s Portland Pretzel Throwdown
The blogger behind Banana Wonder, dedicated to food, culture and the people in between, has a mission: to find the best pretzel in Portland, Oregon.
The first stop on her quest, last August, was Bridgeport Brewery (1313 NW Marshal), where she wrote of the house made pretzels: These were good, but by no means blew my socks off.
Deschutes Brewery (210 NW 11th) was next – and the brew pub pretzel did not disappoint:
The Pretzel: Invokes glorious carbohydrate-happy sensors with thick, doughy insides. Good amount of electrolyte balancing salt flecks to keep you coming back for more without sending you out the door with high blood pressure. Crust is not bitter, and the entire pretzel is baked consistently. Good for sharing, if you are generous.
Seven other pretzels, and counting, have been reviewed so far, including the dirty pretzel at Spints Alehouse, Fressen Artisan Bakery‘s traditional Bavarian pretzel with course sea salt, and the slightly toothy knot at Prost.
Visit Banana Wonder for the rest of the reviews, and rankings. Find the reviews under the blog category pretzel.

Oregon History Blogged (3-January-2012)
- The Wil / Wal Controversy at Cafe Unknown – Willamette won out, but there was a time when Wallamet was a contender. Early Oregonians had strong feelings about the controversy, and often used the debate as a proxy for political arguments.
- Reed College Group Scans Poetry Under Light of Moon In Demonstration Against Arresting of Fellow Student at pdx tales – seems in 1947 the Portland Police arrested Reedie Tom Kelly for reading Shelley by moonlight. Bonus: The Oregonian editorial on the matter.
- 2011 in Review – and in Rhyme at Portland Preservation – Yup, a roundup of 2011 historical preservation stories.
- Whiskey and Gin. Oh, and Vodka at Oregon Rediviva – Vodka was #1 in Oregon in 2011. In 1935? Oregonians prefer corn liquor. I the first seven months of 1935, a mere five gallons of Vodka had been sold in the state!
- Blitz Brewery Blows Its Top at Dead Memories Portland
– On occasion, when days were warm, “Mt. St. Henry’s” would blow its top, showering those below with beery goodness.
