Kick Ass Oregon History Vol 4 #2: ORe-Gasm

February 14, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Kick Ass Oregon History Vol 4 #2: ORe-GasmKick Ass Oregon History is the latest series of podcasts from the enthusiastic historians behind ORHistory.com.

Volume 4 #2 dropped yesterday – ORe-Gasm:

In which we celebrate Oregon’s birthday by drenching our self in hot, wet, sticky history.

The brains behind this Kick Ass project are the crack hustlers of Oregon History Doug Kenck-Crispin and Andy Lindberg. Doug is a graduate student studying Public History and Pacific Northwest History at PSU, and Andy, though a Portland native, is currently working as an actor in New York City. Doug does most of the research and writing for the podcasts with input from Andy, who voices the broadcasts with a thespian’s flair.

With the Kick Ass Oregon History podcast they plan to cover just the good stuff: Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll and Earth Shattering, Devastating Destruction.

Ultimately, our goal is to take Oregon History out of the hallowed halls of the academy, get folks excited and enthused about this shared history, and get them out into the state, digging it and experiencing it. Get them to embrace it, and get their boots muddy in the process. It’s all OUR History; nobody owns it.

Banana Wonder’s Portland Pretzel Throwdown

January 26, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Fressen Pretzel, photograph courtesy BananaWonder.comThe blogger behind Banana Wonder, dedicated to food, culture and the people in between, has a mission: to find the best pretzel in Portland, Oregon.

The first stop on her quest, last August, was Bridgeport Brewery (1313 NW Marshal), where she wrote of the house made pretzels: These were good, but by no means blew my socks off.

Deschutes Brewery (210 NW 11th) was next – and the brew pub pretzel did not disappoint:

The Pretzel: Invokes glorious carbohydrate-happy sensors with thick, doughy insides. Good amount of electrolyte balancing salt flecks to keep you coming back for more without sending you out the door with high blood pressure. Crust is not bitter, and the entire pretzel is baked consistently. Good for sharing, if you are generous.

Seven other pretzels, and counting, have been reviewed so far, including the dirty pretzel at Spints Alehouse, Fressen Artisan Bakery‘s traditional Bavarian pretzel with course sea salt, and the slightly toothy knot at Prost.

Visit Banana Wonder for the rest of the reviews, and rankings. Find the reviews under the blog category pretzel.

  • The Wil / Wal Controversy at Cafe Unknown – Willamette won out, but there was a time when Wallamet was a contender. Early Oregonians had strong feelings about the controversy, and often used the debate as a proxy for political arguments.
  • Reed College Group Scans Poetry Under Light of Moon In Demonstration Against Arresting of Fellow Student at pdx tales – seems in 1947 the Portland Police arrested Reedie Tom Kelly for reading Shelley by moonlight. Bonus: The Oregonian editorial on the matter.
  • 2011 in Review – and in Rhyme at Portland Preservation – Yup, a roundup of 2011 historical preservation stories.
  • Whiskey and Gin. Oh, and Vodka at Oregon Rediviva – Vodka was #1 in Oregon in 2011. In 1935? Oregonians prefer corn liquor. I the first seven months of 1935, a mere five gallons of Vodka had been sold in the state!
  • Blitz Brewery Blows Its Top at Dead Memories Portland
  • – On occasion, when days were warm, “Mt. St. Henry’s” would blow its top, showering those below with beery goodness.
