Kick Ass Oregon History Vol 4 #3: Mad Max

March 18, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Don’t forget, this Tuesday, March 20, 2012 – you won’t want to miss the Humanity On Wheels: An Evening of Mass Transit Tales!, brought to you by Kick Ass Oregon History and TriMet Diaries!

KICK ASS OREGON HISTORY VOL 4 #3: MAD MAXKick Ass Oregon History is the latest series of podcasts from the enthusiastic historians behind ORHistory.com.

And volume 4 #3 just dropped: Mad Max: Portland’s Death Trolley.

In which we learn that a ticket to ride is a ticket to doom.

The brains behind this Kick Ass project are the crack hustlers of Oregon History Doug Kenck-Crispin and Andy Lindberg. Doug is a graduate student studying Public History and Pacific Northwest History at PSU, and Andy, though a Portland native, is currently working as an actor in New York City. Doug does most of the research and writing for the podcasts with input from Andy, who voices the broadcasts with a thespian’s flair.

With the Kick Ass Oregon History podcast they plan to cover just the good stuff: Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll and Earth Shattering, Devastating Destruction.

Ultimately, our goal is to take Oregon History out of the hallowed halls of the academy, get folks excited and enthused about this shared history, and get them out into the state, digging it and experiencing it. Get them to embrace it, and get their boots muddy in the process. It’s all OUR History; nobody owns it.

Visit ORHistory.com and stay tuned to @Oregon_History on Twitter for further details on specific episodes and the series. Catch up on missed episodes at the Kick Ass Oregon History archives.

The Public Staircases of Portland

February 28, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Portland Stairs MapWashingtonian Doug Beyerlein believes outdoor public stairways are a window into the soul of a community.

He has created a website, PublicStairs.com, devoted to the discovery and documentation of major outdoor public stairways anywhere in the world, which features stair maps for cities throughout the world.

His map for Portland, Oregon inventories two dozen outdoor public stairways that consist of at least 100 steps. Most of the staircases are described in The Portland Stairs Book, by Laura O. Foster.

Each staircase description includes the upper and lower locations, the number of steps, elevation gain, the staircase materials (e.g. concrete, wood, packed earth, etc.), and where to find said staircase in Foster’s book.

February 22, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Humanity on Wheels: An Evening of Mass Transit Tales! Humanity on Wheels: An Evening of Mass Transit Tales! is coming to the Jack London Bar (in the basement of the Rialto Poolroom at 529 SW 4th Ave.) on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 7:30pm.

Kick Ass Oregon History is pleased to partner with TriMet Diaries in offering for your amusement and education… “Humanity On Wheels; an Evening of Mass Transit Tales!” . . .

On this evening we will revel in Mass Transit Glory with the following distinguished speakers:

www.orhistory.com‘s Ribald Resident Historian Doug Kenck-Crispin, who has publicly commuted downtown daily since 1984, will tell the yarns of TriMet’s history, being sure to leave in all the gory details!

Bill Reagan will share his findings as a devoted Urban Explorer and Chronicler.

Jeff Guardalabene, or just Dr. Jeff will regale the swooned audience with his tales of TriMet adventures, and perhaps channel some tattered beat generation musings on public transportation.

Other Special Guests shall surely arrive (with transfer in hand, of course) and an Open Mic session shall round out the evening – where you too can share your Mass Transit Stories, both angelic and satanic in nature.

And you certainly won’t want to miss orhistory.com‘s assistant Mellia Lang’s awesome TriMet stage set – it’s like a diorama come to life!

Won’t you join us? Conveniently located in the heart of the formerly “fareless square.”
