Northeast Portland Sunday Parkways (13-May-2012)

May 8, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Sunday ParkwaysThe first of five 2012 Sunday Parkways takes place this Sunday, May 13, 2012 in Northeast Portland.

From 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Mother’s Day wind your way on bike or foot through mostly residential streets free of car traffic, from one park to the next.

Just like last year, this year’s 8 mile loop connects Northeast Portland’s Woodlawn, Fernhill, and Alberta Parks and Rigler School. Enjoy food, music and activities at all the stops along the route.

Super Cheap Portland to Seattle BoltBus Service

May 1, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

BoltBusGreyhound’s super cheap BoltBus service is coming to the Northwest.

Portlanders have another option for trips to Seattle, and this one’s the cheapest yet (cheaper even than Craigslist Rideshares, which seem to average $20). Tickets start at $7 each way, with occasional $1 specials and a frequent buser Bolt Rewards program that gives you a free fare after 8 rides (i.e. 4 round trips).

Portland/Seattle service is set to begin on May 17, 2012. The Seattle stop is at the International District Station at Fifth Avenue South and King Street and in Portland the bus stops at 647 SW Salmon.

For more details visit BoltBus.com and read PortlandAfoot’s BoltBus Wiki entry.

Milk Carton Boat Race 2012 – Registration is Open!

April 17, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

2012 Milk Carton Boat RaceThe only Rose Festival affiliated event I care about returns in 2012: the Milk Carton Boat Race!

Race day is Sunday, June 10 (11am), at the Westmoreland Park casting pond.

After a seven year hiatus the race I obsessed about as a kid returned in 2009. Check out my 2009 and 2010 reviews. The basics for spectators: Bring a blanket (or lawn chairs) and a picnic lunch and enjoy the spectacle!

If you want to participate there are two categories of boat to choose from:

Racing class: designed for speed and consists of narrower and lighter frames

Showboat class: design is primary goal – does not race

There are four classes of racing boats: children, adults, family/multi-rider, and corporate. Read the Race Information and Rules (pdf) for all the details and visit the event website. Follow @MilkCartonBoat on Twitter for the latest news.

Friend of the blog Mike Vogel has raced the last two years.

Filmed By Bike (April 13-18, 2012)

April 8, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Filmed By BikeThe 10th annual Filmed by Bike film festival takes place Friday through Sunday, April 13-18, 2012 at the Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton).

Filmed by Bike is a film festival featuring bike-themed movies from all around the world and this year we’re celebrating our 10th Anniversary. We receive over 100 submissions and a jury selects the winning movies. We curate those selections into six different programs that run across 13 showtimes and five days. This year we are showing 75 movies!

The festival kicks off Friday night with a street party on Clinton Street in front of the theater from 5:30pm to 11:30pm. The street party includes a beer garden and entertainment – including break dancers!

The show program is available on the website. Buy tickets online or at the door. Consider a festival pass!
