The Fire on the Mountain success story

January 15, 2008 by Dave 5 Comments

fireonmountain.jpgArguably Portland’s best buffalo wings restaurant, Fire on the Mountain (4225 N Interstate) is profiled in BusinessWeek‘s Success Stories feature.

The gist of the article is that restaurants don’t fail as often as one would think because of lack of capital, or poor location, but that restaurant success is largely influenced by the strength of the concept, something Fire on the Mountain’s owners had:

“The more I researched, the more confidence I gained,” says [co-owner Jordan] Busch, who had been kicking around the wings idea since he was a teenager. He already had the whole concept mapped out in his head: It would be someplace with the ambiance of a local sandwich shop rather than a sports bar—someplace where everybody could feel comfortable. There would be a big chalkboard menu, live music, and a rotating gallery of local artists on the walls. Busch says most of these details were things he just had a gut feeling about.

(Though their non-concept bases were well covered too; in my opinion the North Interstate location is great, and the article tells us they had a $100,000 investment to start their business.)

Old fake grass removed from the Piggie

January 12, 2008 by Dave Leave a Comment

pgepark-logo.gifAs announced yesterday, PGE Park (affectionately known as The Piggie, and even more affectionately, Civic Stadium), is getting a new surface. The shabby NeXturf had been in place since the 2001 renovations.

Yesterday workers began tearing up the old neXturf. Intrepid Timbers fan and blogger, Steeplechase3k, stopped by the park with his camera to record for posterity the turf’s interment.

First Timbers tidbits of 2008

January 11, 2008 by Dave 4 Comments

TimbersThe Timbers season is still a few months away, but the anticipation continues to build as new bits of information trickle out.

  • The big news, though it’s still not official, is that the ancient carpet in PGE Park is being replaced with FieldTurf. The old stuff might be torn out as early as today. [Update: it’s now official]
  • Fox Soccer Channel has announced their 2008 USL broadcast lineup. This is in addition to the 5 games the Timbers have on Fox Sports Net. The Timbers make four appearances in the regular season. The best part is that this includes three road games:

Friday May 30 Portland @ Montreal 5:00 pm
Friday June 27 Portland @ Carolina 5:00 pm
Thursday August 7 Seattle @ Portland 8:00 pm
Friday August 22 Portland @ Vancouver 8:00 pm
