January 23: The Groove Movement Fundraiser for Haiti, with Chervona

January 18, 2010 by Dave Leave a Comment

Join The Groove Movement this Saturday, January 23rd at the Mount Tabor Theater (4811 SE Hawthorne) for a benefit for Haiti earthquake relief.

Chervona headlines, one of my favorite local bands since I saw them perform at last summer’s Polish Festival.

Intervision and Voltronic will perform as well.

If you’re not familiar with The Groove Movement:

The Groove Movement is our approach to making change in the world, where that change is needed most! The idea was born out of our love for music and a passion to help those who truly need it. It is our belief that we can promote and create change, bring awareness to the many struggles throughout our modern World, and deliver hope to even the darkest corners of our Earth… all… through Music.

Doors open at 8pm, music starts at 9pm. All donations ($8 per person recommended) support Haiti Earthquake Relief.

2010 Sunday Parkways

January 16, 2010 by Dave Leave a Comment

Sunday ParkwaysA Portland Sunday Parkway is an opportunity to spend a pleasant summery Sunday morning and afternoon winding your way on bike or foot through mostly residential streets free of car traffic. The routes take you from one park to the next, where you can check out the vendors and demonstrations, or just sit down and relax.

Heather and I have participated in two Portland Sunday Parkways – we walked the very first one in North Portland in 2008, and last year we rode bikes in the Southeast Portland event. We highly recommend participating.

And now the 2010 Portland Sunday Parkway dates have been announced:

May 16 Northeast Sunday Parkways – connecting Wilshire, Fernhill, Alberta, and Woodlawn Parks

June 27 North Sunday Parkways – connecting Peninsula, Arbor Lodge, and Kenton Parks

July 18 East Portland Sunday Parkways – connecting Lents and Ed Benedict Parks (The East Portland Exposition will also be at Benedict Park July 17-18)

August 15 Southeast Sunday Parkways – connecting Col. Summers, Laurelhurst, and Sunnyside Parks (The Hawthorne Street Fair will also be in full swing)

Update: Route maps are now available!
Details of a fifth parkway in September, will be announced soon. Visit the Sunday Parkway website for vendor, volunteer, and sponsor information.

Portland Timbers Roundup (01/15/10)

January 15, 2010 by Dave Leave a Comment

TimbersNow we know that the season will happen (see last week’s roundup), we await the release of the season schedule so we can begin planning our spring and summer. Last year the schedule was released on January 23rd; I have my doubts we will know it that early this year, but stay tuned.

Before we get to the roundup, there are two important Timbers related events in the next week:

  • January 16: Timbers Army January Third Saturday
  • January 20: City Council Meeting where final PGE Park renovation plans will be be debated [Update: this looks like it has been postponed – I’ll update when I know more]

And now to the roundup:

Old Growth Timber? by Zanger at OurPDX

$65.

That’s what it’s costing for me to participate in the Portland Timbers open tryout at the end of the month. I love soccer and can’t wait to get out there with everyone to see how I fare. There is one small thing to consider, though.

I’m 40 years old. [More]

January 16: Timbers Army Third Saturday

January 14, 2010 by Dave Leave a Comment

Timbers ArmyCome on out to my neck of the woods for this month’s Timber’s Army Third Saturday, which takes place this Saturday, January 16th at Maui’s (3508 N Williams) – anytime after 7:01pm.

Enjoy cheap drinks and pints and maybe a bit of pool. The gathering will also afford you the opportunity to discuss plans for attending the upcoming Portland City Council meeting on Wednesday, January 20th with your Timbers Army brethren. [Update: looks like it has been postponed – I’ll update when I know more]

The first city council reading of the final plans to renovate PGE Park is scheduled for Wednesday, January 20, 2010. This ultimately will be followed by a council vote the next week, but it is crucial that we have a large presence at the reading as the Timbers look to finalize one last piece that will clear the way for MLS in 2011 and the council debate generally happens at the initial meeting.

It is extremely important that we show up in force in support of approving the final binding deal for plans for MLS at PGE Park.

This meeting could be pushed the January 21st and we will update you if that happens.

(Check out the Facebook event page for more information.)

January 29-31: Chocolate Fest

January 14, 2010 by Dave Leave a Comment

Chocolate Fest returns to the World Forestry Center (4033 SW Canyon Road) again this year, and even football fans can make it because it won’t be held on Superbowl Weekend (like last year).

I recently learned (via Twitter) that Choffy will be featured at the fest on Friday and Saturday, giving out Choffy samples. What is Choffy, you ask? It’s brewed chocolate. Basically cacao beans ground up like coffee, and brewed like coffee. I’ve tried some, and it’s nice! (I first heard about Choffy last summer when Geoff Kleinman blogged about his Choffy experience, and interviewed the co-founder, Jason Sherwood, at On Portland.)

Samples galore in the Chocolate Bazaar, seminars, and plenty of vendors hawking chocolate and chocolate related wares, make up the festival. Also visitors will get to preview The Chocolate Story exhibit, which officially opens at the Discover Museum on the premises on January 30th.

From its beginning as a potent and magical drink used by the Aztecs to its current worldwide popularity, The Chocolate Story takes visitors on an educational and fun journey with artistic text panels, videos, displays, and even the scent of chocolate wafting through the air.

The 5th Annual Chocolate Fest takes place the weekend of Friday, January 29th through Sunday, January 31 (open 6pm-9pm on Friday, and 10am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday). Admission is $8, $7 for seniors (62+), $5 for children. Parking will set you back $2, so that’s why you’ll take the MAX (which will set you back $2-$2.30).
