The LA Times Visits Beervana

May 29, 2010 by Dave Knows 4 Comments

LA TimesEarlier this week The New York Times gave Belmont Station and Saraveza some love, and now the Los Angeles Times is singing the praises of Portland beer: Achieving Beervana in Portland, Ore.

The writer, Mary Engel, describes the Portland beer tour on which she takes her out of town guests, Jim and Lenora.

First stop, after breakfast at Helser’s, is the Portland Farmers Market for a taste of the Gose beer at the Upgright Brewing stall.

Rogue Ales Public House and Tugboat are next on the itinerary. On the final day Hopworks Urban Brewery and Alameda Brewhouse get visits.

Not a bad tour (though I would have thrown in a visit to the Horse Brass, Belmont Station, Bailey’s Taproom, or Saraveza for more variety.)

The article also includes a nice synopsis of the Oregon beer statistics canon:

With about 40 small breweries in town — new ones open so frequently it’s hard to keep track — Portland has overtaken Munich, Germany, as the brewing capital of the world. But numbers alone don’t capture Portland’s status among true beer aficionados, the kind who would sooner quaff hemlock than a Miller or a Bud. There’s something about this most livable of cities that encourages innovation.

“You’ve got to have the right culture of people,” says Marc C. Martin, a local beer writer who is launching a brewery tour business. “Portland is eco-friendly, green, bicycling, Birkenstock-wearing — it’s a culture that lends itself to unusual and unique things.”

Nationwide, so-called craft breweries account for only about 4% of all beer consumed (in Oregon, it’s 12%), but they inspire near-religious devotion. Oregon’s breweries draw more tourists than its fabled wineries, according to a 2006 study conducted for the state.

The last stat about craft beer consumption always surprises me. Seriously? 88% of the beer consumed in Oregon is macro-lagers? Gah!

Biggest Trailblazers Fan in Elko, Nevada?

May 28, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

My brother Steve and his family moved to Elko, Nevada a few years ago. But despite keepin’ it rural (as the tagline of his blog succinctly puts it), he has stayed true to his Portland roots in at least one way: he’s a huge Trailblazers fan.

As I’ve mentioned before, he secured a personalized license plate as soon as he moved to Nevada: BLZRFAN. Well recently he and his wife bought a second car, so of course they needed to get another personalized license plate declaring their allegiance:

Blazer Fans

Steve is also an entertaining (if infrequent) blogger at the confusingly named blog Dave Knows: Elko. And though he only started Twittering recently, he’s a natural; follow him at @ElkoSteve.

“Come Together Home” trailer from Ivy Lin on Vimeo.

The film’s synopsis:

Block 14 in Lone Fir Cemetery, the first Chinese burial ground in Portland—and site of as many as 1,500 burials—now stands as a fenced off void of gravel after most of the remains were exhumed and shipped back to China in 1928 & 1949.

Sixty years later, Director Ivy Lin follows the footsteps of the missing 1949 shipment in an extraordinary journey from Portland to Hong Kong.

The Timbers’ exhibition soccer game against the Boca Juniors Saturday has taken on a greater urgency.

The struggling Timbers, winless in the month of May, are lacking chemistry and cohesion and a shake-up could be coming if the team’s fortunes don’t change soon. [more]

Tune in tomorrow for a match day preview with more on Portland vs. Boca Juniors.

May 28-31: Fireworks, Rose Fest, County Fair, History Pub and the Timbers

Memorial Day weekend is looking good . . .

Friday

Rose Festival 2010Rose Festival Fireworks

I’m not particularly fond of most of the Rose Festival experience. Okay, I’m downright cynical. In particular the mud, clowns, parades, and strident corporate sponsorships are major turnoffs for me.

That being said, some of the events can even draw me in. One of those takes place this Friday, May 28th at around 10pm: the Rose Festival Fireworks display. [more]

The 2010 Multnomah County Fair takes place this weekend, May 29th through 31st, at Oaks Park, noon until 7pm each day.

Seems like it might work against them to hold it the same weekend the Rose Festival Waterfront Village kicks off, but frankly, the County Fair looks like it might be more fun. [more]
