July 10: Mississippi Street Fair 2010

June 30, 2010 by Dave Leave a Comment

Mississippi Ave Street Fair 2010The 2010 Mississippi Avenue Street Fair takes place Saturday, July 10th from 10am until 9pm. On North Mississippi Avenue, of course.

This is my favorite Portland street fair. It’s compact, only five blocks from Skidmore to Fremont, so you’re guaranteed to run into your friends amongst the 30,000 or so other festival goers.

“Grandfather” Leonard Smith’s BBQ Rib-Off contest is unique to the festival, and there’s a Local Brew Garden, featuring craft beer from seven local breweries (Hopworks Urban Brewery, Lucky Labrador Brewing Company, Widmer Brothers Brewing Company, Lompoc Brewery, Ninkasi Brewing, Southern Oregon Brewing and 10 Barrel Brewing Company).

Four stages host music, dance, and poetry performances by over two dozen local acts all day. The parade starts at noon at Beech Street. Almost all the local businesses will not only be open, but bursting onto the sidewalk and street with displays and additional seating in front of their locations.

Read my posts about previous Mississippi street fairs to see how much fun it is: Mississippi Avenue Street Fair 2009, and 2008.

Visit the Mississippi Ave website for the press release, fact sheet, entertainment schedule, and more, and see you on July 10th, 2010 on Mississippi!

July 1: 7th Planet Picture Show presents Soldier

June 30, 2010 by Dave Leave a Comment

SoldierPortland’s answer to MST3K, the 7th Planet Picture Show, takes place at 7pm this Thursday, July 1st at Mount Tabor Theater (4811 SE Hawthorne).

The movie?  Soldier.  Huh.  I’ve never even heard of it. It’s got Gary Busey in it though, so it has to be good . . .

Sergeant Todd (Russell) is a veteran soldier for the an elite group of the armed forces of Earth. After being defeated by a new breed of genetically engineered soldiers, he is dumped on a waste planet and left for dead. He soon interacts with a group of crash survivors who lead out a peaceful existence on the planet. The peace is soon broken as the new breed of soldiers lands to eliminate the colony, which Sergeant Todd must defend

Show is free, but there’s an entirely optional suggested donation of $5. 21 and over only, there’s a bar!

Match Day 06/30/2010: Portland Timbers vs Seattle Sounders

June 29, 2010 by Dave Leave a Comment

TimbersThe Portland Timbers take on the Seattle Sounders tonight at PGE Park. Match kicks off at 7:30, but I recommend arriving early, whether to secure your tickets, your seats, or both; if last year was any indication, it may very well end up a sell out.

This third round US Open Cup match will almost certainly be the last time the USL version of the Timbers face the MLS Sounders – you don’t want to miss it!

Tuesday Timbers Tidbits (06/29/2010)

June 29, 2010 by Dave Leave a Comment

TimbersThe Portland Timbers, having won four of their last five matches, look to be returning to form. Still, until last weekend’s 2-0 defeat of Minnesota, the Timbers had not won a league match since April. Sunday night, with a 73rd minute goal by Bright Dike, they defeated the Tampa Bay Rowdies 1-0 for their second league win in a row.

Recaps:

  • Bright Dike strike lone goal in Timbers 1-0 win over Tampa Bay by Allison Andrews at The Timber Mill
  • Game 14: Timbers 1 – Rowdies 0 by mao at the Portland Timbers USL Blog at The Offside
  • Rowdies Lose 1-0 To Portland Timbers at FC Tampa Bay Rowdies
  • Timbers earn big league win against Tampa Bay before epic battle on Wednesday by Kip Kesgard at OregonLive.com

As Kip correctly points out above, there’s a big match Wednesday: the Portland Timbers host the MLS Seattle Sounders once again in a 3rd round Lamar Hunt US Open Cup matchup. The 2009 edition of this match took place almost a year ago to the day. And although the result for the Timbers was not as awesome as the tifo, a sellout crowd of 16,382 experienced a memorable evening.

And speaking of MLS, the latest news is that Timbers season ticket sales for 2011 are strong [I got mine yesterday, invoice #107!].

In Timbers MLS crest debacle news, Pitch Invasion‘s Tom Dunmore summarizes the compromises. I think I’m done with the controversy myself – I don’t like the new crest much, but it could have been far worse. [And no doubt in a few years, a return to the “retro” logo will be announced – it’s all about selling merchandise!]

And finally, an announcement: The randomly drawn winner of the Timbers vs. Manchester City match tickets giveaway is commenter rossh. Thanks for playing!

4th of July Fireworks in Portland (2010)

June 28, 2010 by Dave 3 Comments

2013 Fireworks details here!

Fireworks! There will be several fireworks shows in the Portland area this Sunday, July 4th 2010. All of the shows listed below can be viewed from the sponsoring event venues, or the surrounding area – I suggest finding a tall building or hill (we watched fireworks all over town from our apartment building roof last year). Or consider TriMet’s nifty Independence Day guide if you want to get a bit closer.

Fort Vancouver

This is the big one; one of the largest fireworks displays west of the Mississippi River. Last year’s show was cancelled due to funding issues, but it’s back in 2010. The show starts about 10pm, and can be seen from miles around, on both sides of the Columbia. The fireworks show is the climax to a day of festivities at the fort – visit the website for more information, including admission prices and entertainment schedules.

Waterfront Blues Festival

Starting at 10:05pm at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, this is the largest fireworks show in Oregon. Viewable from anyplace around town that has a nice view of downtown, this one’s the easiest to get to and from on TriMet. And of course if you’re attending the blues festival, you’ll have a great view.

Oaks Park

Also on the Willamette, the Oaks Park 4th of July Spectacular starts at 9:55pm. Viewable from parts of SE Portland and of course at the park, where if the weather’s nice, you might consider picnicking. Admission for July 4th is $5 ($3 for seniors 62 and up, and $2 for kids 15 and younger). Summertime at Oaks Park can be blissful.

PGE Park

The Portland Beavers host the Las Vegas 51s at PGE Park Sunday, July 4th, and as per tradition there will be a post-game fireworks display. Watch from the bleachers, or from 18th Street, or plenty of other good viewing areas in SW and NW Portland.
