September 14, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Portland Pirate Festival 2010The Fifth Annual Portland Pirate Festival takes place this Saturday and Sunday, September 18 and 19 2010 at Cathedral Park.

I have never made it to this event (for one thing I have no swashbuckling outfit), so all I can tell you is check out the website. There’s music, dance and performance, historical reenactments (with cannons!), stuff for kids, and of course there will be grub and grog!

The aaarrrs and blimeys begin at 10am both Saturday and Sunday, September 18 and 19. And continue irritating until 10pm Saturday and 6pm Sunday.

Tickets can be acquired at the gate, via Brown Paper Tickets, or at select local retailers.

Portland Oktoberfest at Director ParkPortlander’s have another German beer festival option this year – Maletis Beverage is sponsoring a three day Portland Oktoberfest at Director Park

From noon until 9pm Friday and Saturday, September 17 and 18, and noon until 7pm on Sunday, September 19 come downtown to enjoy German beer, music, and food cart food! Admission is $5, and this event is 21 and over only.

I haven’t found too many other details, however. Maletis’ twitter account, and this twitpic, are my only source of information on this event. Stay tuned and I’ll update this post if I learn more!

September 22: Back Fence PDX

September 14, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Back Fence PDXBack Fence PDX presents Family Plots on Wednesday, September 22 2010.

So how exactly does this work? It’s like this:

Our Back Fence Storytelling event is the kissing cousin to San Francisco’s Porchlight Storytelling Series. It is an evening with seven people telling true, unmemorized ten-minute stories based on the month’s theme. The stories must not have been performed publicly prior to their Back Fence PDX telling.

Heather and I have had a great time at all the previous Back Fence events we’ve been to – which is every one this year so far! Free cupcakes from Saint Cupcake make the rounds at intermission, and looks like we’re in for that treat again on the 22nd. We’re not going to miss this show.

Your storytellers:

JOHANNA STEIN
“Sorority Sluts 3: Spring Break! (The Outtakes)” & Mortified

ADAM ARNOLD
Fashion Designer & Former Disco Dancer

CAMI KAOS
Strange Love Live Host

PAULS TOUTONGHI
Expert Burrito Roller & Pushcart Prize Winner

ALEXIS REHRMANN
Volcano Lover & Web Editor Portland Monthly

PETER AMES CARLIN
Biographer of Rock Stars

Reserve your tickets now (they’re only $14 this way!). The venue is the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan), and the show is 21 and over only. Doors will open at 6pm for food and drink, and Back Fence begins at 7:30pm. As usual free cupcakes from Saint Cupcake made the rounds intermissions!

Tuesday Timbers Tidbits (09/14/2010)

September 14, 2010 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

TimbersThe Portland Timbers tied Carolina 0-0 on the first of four Saturday road matches in a row. Next up, Puerto Rico.

The Timbers clinched a playoff berth the week before, so the team will now be jockeying for playoff position the rest of the season – the top eight teams make it to the playoffs with conference champs the top two seeds. Currently the Timbers are in 3rd place in the USL Conference, behind Rochester and Austin.

Timbers blog Dropping Timber has a new look. And check out the relatively pristine message board!

Check out the great story at KPTV about the 107ist‘s efforts to help the Jefferson Democrats‘s soccer teams.

Over at PortlandTimbers.com, Futty Danso talks about his recent national team experience. The Gambia called him up for help qualifying for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations against Namibia.

2004 A-League rookie of the year with the Portland Timbers, Alan Gordon, received MLS Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career. He had a couple nice assists in a 2-0 Chivas win over the Revolution.

And of course by now you no doubt have heard about the cheeky Portland Timbers MLS billboard in Seattle?

Portland Polish Festival 2010 (September 25-26)

September 13, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

2012 details here!

Polish FestivalThe Polish Festival is one of this Portland’s best annual cultural events, and my personal favorite. It takes place this year on Saturday and Sunday, September 25 and 26.

Take in non-stop music (much of it featuring accordions!), dance performances, a street dance, and polka contests while enjoying Polish food like pierogies, kielbasa, gołąbki (cabbage rolls), placki ziemniaczane (potato pancakes), and other delectable options – and of course delicious Polish beer! In the vendor village, check out the jewelry, clothing, Polish pottery, and sundries for sale.

Below the masthead on the festival website are the words: the best kept secret of Portland, Oregon. But the festival is not a secret anymore – it’s one of the premier fall festivals in the Portland area.

Entrance to the Polish Festival is free. It takes place Saturday, September 25th, from 11am to 10pm and Sunday the 26th, noon to 6pm, and is held on North Failing street, east side of Interstate, between the St. Stanislaus Church and the Polish Library (3900 N. Interstate). Take the 4 – Fessenden to Mississippi and Failing and then take the Failing Street Pedestrian Bridge across the freeway and you are there. Or take the Yellow Line MAX to the Overlook Stop – Failing street is two blocks north up Interstate. Check out the festival website for more information.

Heather and I both blogged the festival in 2008 and 2009:

Festival veteran tip: arrive Saturday evening after sunset to avoid the bulk of the crowd, and the ridiculously long lines. (Read more tips here!)
