August 14, 1933: The Tillamook Burn is Sparked

August 14, 2011 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Map of the Tillamook Burn in Morning Oregonian, 28 August 1933

Morning Oregonian headline, 16 August 1933Tillamook Burn refers to a series of forest fires that devastated large swathes of the Coast Range. The first and most damaging one began at a Gales Creek logging operation west of Forest Grove on August 14, 1933.

The near-record weather conditions on that day (104 degree temperature with a relative humidity of about 20 percent), a tinder dry forest ready to burn, and the remote location of the fire, combined to ignite and feed a challenging fire.

Loggers working in the area at the time offered intriguing explanations for how the fire started, but official investigation reports that have stood the test of time identified it as stemming from friction generated when a large Douglas-fir log was dragged across a downed tree. The fire started in a large area of extremely flammable logging debris at the end of a railroad spur. Within an hour, the fire burned through sixty acres of logging slash. The loggers made a valiant effort to fight the fire, but their tools consisted primarily of shovels and hoes and depended entirely on the strength and fire experience of men who could be drafted to help. By nightfall, it was clear the fire had the upper hand and would spread into valuable timber to the south and west.

Ultimately almost a quarter million acres burned in that first fire, with most of the area burning again in 1939 and 1945 (Forest and Adjacent Burn in the Tillamook Burn Area of Northwestern Oregon, by Bonita J. Neiland in Ecology Vol. 39, No. 4 – Oct., 1958).

Kick Ass Oregon History Vol 3 #1: The Tripped-Out Story of Vortex 1

August 13, 2011 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Kick Ass Oregon History: Story of Vortex 1Kick Ass Oregon History is the latest series of podcasts from the enthusiastic historians behind ORHistory.com.

Volume 3 #1 dropped Friday – Vortex 1:

The incredible tale of how Republican Oregon Governor Tom McCall averted violence and doom by holding a state-sponsored Hippie Rock Festival at McIver Park in rural Clackamas County during the summer of 1970.

In partnership with the Oregon Historical Society, and their exhibit “Oregon Rocks: A History of Popular Music in Oregon,” on exhibit August 25, 2011 – January 15, 2012.

Featuring an interview with Vortex 1 historian Matt Love.

The brains behind this Kick Ass project are the crack hustlers of Oregon History Doug Kenck-Crispin and Andy Lindberg. Doug is a graduate student studying Public History and Pacific Northwest History at PSU, and Andy, though a Portland native, is currently working as an actor in New York City. Doug does most of the research and writing for the podcasts with input from Andy, who voices the broadcasts with a thespian’s flair.

With the Kick Ass Oregon History podcast they plan to cover just the good stuff: Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll and Earth Shattering, Devastating Destruction.

Ultimately, our goal is to take Oregon History out of the hallowed halls of the academy, get folks excited and enthused about this shared history, and get them out into the state, digging it and experiencing it. Get them to embrace it, and get their boots muddy in the process. It’s all OUR History; nobody owns it.

Visit ORHistory.com and stay tuned to @Oregon_History on Twitter for further details on specific episodes and the series. Catch up on missed episodes at the Kick Ass Oregon History archives.

August 13, 1848: Congress Passes Law Making Oregon a Territory

August 13, 2011 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Oregon's official seal during the territorial period.

A dispute with Great Britain as to who should control the Pacific Northwest was settled in 1846 with the signing of the Oregon Treaty. Great Britain got Vancouver Island and everything above the 49th parallel. The U.S.A. got everything below, to the California border (the U.S. meanwhile, was also engaged in a war with Mexico over claims to California).

In 1847 the infamous Whitman Massacre occurred, and though the pioneers of the Willamette Valley had already established their own provisional government, the events in Walla Walla forced the hand of Congress, which, on August 13, 1848, officially established the Oregon Territory.

President James K. Polk appointed Joseph Lane governor of the newly created Oregon Territory. One of his first duties when he arrived at Oregon City nearly a year later was to precipitate the Whitman Massacre trial.

August 12, 1788: Lady Washington Anchors off Tillamook Bay

Painting depicting battle between Native Americans around Tillamook Bay Sailing from Boston Harbor in 1787 in the ships Columbia Rediviva and Lady Washington, Captains John Kendrick and Robert Gray brought the first American fur trading enterprise to the north Pacific Coast (Oregon Geographic Names by Lewis A. McArthur in The Quarterly of the Oregon Historical Society Vol. 26, No. 4 – Dec., 1925).

Sailing north along the coast, on August 12, 1788, Captain Gray in the Lady Washington anchored off Tillamook Bay in preparation for crossing the bar. Two day later they did so and obtained fresh water and food. That particular visit did not end well, however, when a skirmish occurred between Indians and Captain Grey’s crew. Gray called the place Murderers’ Harbour.
