PDX Beer Week (June 7-17, 2012)
The 2nd annual PDX Beer Week takes place June 7 through 17, 2012 throughout the city.
In addition to having more breweries than any other city in the world, Portland enjoys one of the most advanced beer cultures — and a thirst for fun and educational craft beer events. Portland Beer Week aims to celebrate and expand that culture, not just by promoting Portland brewers and breweries, but tap houses, restaurants, food, and underexplored beer styles. Craft beer culture is not just about the beer itself but about the people, food, camaraderie, and education that comes along with this art form.
The [10-day] week-long festivities kick off on Thursday, June 7 at Spirit of 77 (500 NE MLK Jr. Blvd) with a mini brewfest, a Pop-A-Shot tournament, and the release of PDX Beer Week’s official beer: the 2012 reserve India Red Lager – a special collaboration beer brewed by Deschutes Brewery and Hopworks Urban Brewery.
Check out the PDX Beer Week calendar for a full list of affiliated events, including brewers nights, dinners, festivals, seminars, tastings, and more!
Milk Carton Boat Race (10-June-2012)
The 2012 Rose Festival Milk Carton Boat Race takes place Sunday, June 10 at the Westmoreland Park casting pond – festivities kickoff at 11 a.m.!
My favorite Rose Festival event, I have not missed a race since the 2009 revival, and I won’t miss the 2012 race either!
For first time participants or spectators, I recommend checking out my reviews of the 2009 and 2010 races. My only complaints about the races are that too few participants build their boats out of actual milk cartons – most use milk jugs – and there’s no beer garden. Spectators have been treated to free ice cream floats and chocolate milk the last three years!
If you want to compete, registration is open until June 8!
Pro-tip: Bring a blanket or lawn chairs, a picnic lunch, and enjoy the spectacle.
Rose Festival Fleet Week (June 6-10, 2012)
The 2012 Rose Festival Fleet Week extends from Wednesday, June 6 through Sunday, June 10 – so you know what that means, bridge lifts!
The raising and lowering of the bridges, as I like to call this annual event, begins with ship arrivals Tuesday departures on Monday. Ships will be docking between the Steel and Morrison Bridges, so be prepared for lifts on the Broadway, Steel, and Burnside as the ships arrive – and then on Monday as they depart.
Update: TriMet is warning about MAX delays dues to bridge lifts between 2:30-4 p.m. on both Wednesday and Thursday, June 6 and 7.
For specific arrival and departure times, check out the Columbia River Pilots website dispatch status page (CWALL, I believe, refers to the sea wall along Waterfont Park).
The 2012 Rose Festival Fleet consists of the following ships:
United States Navy
USS William P. Lawrence (DDG 110)
USS Dewey (DDG 105)
USS Ingraham (FFG-61)Royal Canadian Navy
HMCS OrioleUnited States Coast Guard

USCGC Henry Blake (WLM 563) USCGC Adelie (WPB 87333)
