Pittock Mansion: Beaded Purses (February 1 – July 10, 2011)

February 1, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Pittock MansionClosed for much of January for annual maintenance and post-holiday exhibit cleanup, the Pittock Mansion re-opens February 1, 2011 with a new display: Beaded Purses – Finishing Touch.

More than a means to carry personal items, purses express the tastes and personalities of their owners. During the late 19th and 20th centuries, elaborately beaded purses were especially popular. View more than 50 vintage beaded and mesh purses, loaned to Pittock Mansion by a local collector.

The museum is open 11am to 4pm daily and admission is free for members, $8 for adults, $7 for seniors (65+), $5 for youth (ages 6 – 18), and free for children ages 5 and younger.

Portland Timbers 2011 Jerseys, and Jet Plane, Unveiled

December 9, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

The Portland Timbers, with the help of new sponsor Alaska Airlines, unveiled the 2011 MLS jerseys today.

I was one of the lucky fans selected to attend. I brought my trusty point and shoot, which can take decent photos. But not as nice as the photos taken by photographer Steven D. Lenhart. He graciously provided the photo below of new Timbers defender Rodney Wallace modeling the 2011 secondary MLS jersey.

The MLS Timbers know how to throw a party. The unveiling took place in a 64,000 square foot Horizon Air hangar at PDX.

Happy fans were offered free beer and food! I enjoyed a Widmer Drifter myself.

The production was top notch.

And did I mention that there was a jet plane decked out with a Timbers scarf and shield?

Crafty Wonderland Super Colossal Holiday Sale (December 11-12, 2010)

December 5, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

THE CRAFTY WONDERLAND SUPER COLOSSAL HOLIDAY SALE!!!The 2010 Crafty Wonderland Super Colossal Holiday Sale takes place at the Convention Center (777 NE MLK Jr – exhibit hall D) on Saturday and Sunday, December 11 and 12, from 11am until 5pm.

Collage will be there with free craft activities and SCRAP is offering recycled gift wrapping. Several authors will be in attendance signing and selling books, including Emily Martin, author of The Black Apple’s Paper Doll Primer: Activities & Amusements for the Curious Paper Artist, and Twinkie Chan, author of Twinkie Chan’s Crochet Goodies for Fashion Foodies: 20 Yummy Treats to Wear.

About a million vendors (well, at least over 200) will be setting up booths and tables, selling everything from reversible hats to quirky t-shirts, hand made jewelry to stationery, and plenty of bad art . . . I kid, I kid! But with over 200 vendors even if some of the stuff is . . . uh, interesting, some is bound to strike your fancy.

Heather and I attended last year, and can attest that for the craft fanciers, this is a can’t miss event. We can also attest that you must be prepared to stand in a long snaking line (fortunately indoors thanks to the Convention Center’s cavernous foyer/hallway) if you plan to arrive early in anticipation of receiving the goodie bag. Later in the day there was no line to enter. And I can’t remember a single thing in the goodie bag, so maybe it’s not worth the standing in line – your call!

Admission is free, and early shoppers each day receive a Goodie Bag! Visit the Crafty Wonderland website for details, including the book signing and Collage DIY craft workshop schedules.

Portland Filmmaker Seeks Extras for Skivvies and Animal-Costume Themed Scene

October 7, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Did you Kiss Anyone?Filmmaker, and friend of the blog, Mike Vogel is finishing up work on his latest film, Did You Kiss Anyone?, a romantic comedy about marriage, sex, and shi**ing with the door open.

But there’s still a bit of filming to do . . .

Almost one year to the day since we began filming “Did You Kiss Anyone?” we will shoot the second-to-last scene. I try to say this with as much confidence as I can given that we’ve re-scheduled this scene probably close to 7 times.

It’s a pretty weird scene in some ways, involving as many people as we can get to strip down to their underwear (or as close as they feel comfortable) and put on an animal mask. With it being so close to Halloween, I’m hoping people feel a little adventurous. Also, this is Portland, so there’s a solid chance our problem will be too many people.

Heather and I have had the honor of visiting the set a couple times during the filming – once as tourists, and once as extras. We can assure you Mike, his crew, and Portland’s top actors are fun to work with!

Are you brave enough to lend a hand? You’ll get to go to the wrap party! Go read the FAQ for more information, and visit the Facebook page to sign up!
