How is it possible that PDX Beer Week continues? Beer Week in Portland, my friends, is 10 days long! And you won’t want to miss the Scandinavian Midsummer Festival at Oaks Park, and the opening of OHS’s new exhibit Saturday, and lots more!

The 84th annual Portland Scandinavian Midsummer Festival takes place Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Oaks Park.

Scandinavians have a long tradition of celebrating the Summer Solstice with bonfires or raising of the Maypole (Majstång). Here in Portland that tradition is being celebrated for 84 continuous years at the Scandinavian Midsummer Festival. [more]

Oregon VoicesOregon Voices: Change and Challenge in Modern Oregon History – Public Opening

OHS is opening its doors for free on Saturday, June 16. Explore the exhibit’s interactive areas with theatre instructor Morgan Cox. At 1 PM, listen to historian and author Bill Robbins’ talk, “Reflections on Modern Oregon.” After learning about Oregon’s natural resources, kids can decorate their own backpack and fill it with fun tools for exploring Oregon’s great outdoors! Pride NorthwestPortland’s official LGBTQ Pride Parade and Festival, Portland Pride, takes place Friday, June 15 through 17, 2012.

The Portland Pride Parade takes place Sunday, June 17 downtown – kicking off at 11:30 a.m.

The 15th Annual Portland Lesbian and Gay Film Festival takes place September 30 through October 8, 2011 at Cinema 21 (616 NW 21st).

“This year the festival begins September 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Cinema 21 with a very special screening of local filmmaker David Weissman’s deeply moving We Were Here. The film chronicles the heavy impact the AIDS crisis had on San Francisco in the 80s through the eyes of five survivors. David Weissman will be in attendance.” [more]

The Portland Juggling Festival is one of the largest regional juggling festivals in the United States, with jugglers from around the world and down the street joining together to share their knowledge and show their skills. [more]

Swift WatchChapman Vaux’s Swift Watch 2011 – Last official weekend, still some birds!

Every September thousands of Vaux’s Swifts come to Portland. They spend their days eating lots of bugs. In the late afternoon the Swifts begin flying in a giant undulating swirl in the sky about the school. Around sunset they swirl more tightly, like a ground pepper tornado, and begin disappearing, measure by measure, down the chimney. On the lawn below, hundreds of Portlanders gather on lawn chairs and blankets to stare at the sky, mesmerized. Boos erupt when opportunistic Peregrine falcons occasionally get lucky. The crowd cheers, however, when the predators are thwarted. Meanwhile unruly oblivious children scream and roll down the grassy hill. [more

Portland Lesbian and Gay Film Festival 2011

Portland Lesbian and Gay Film Festival 2011The 15th Annual Portland Lesbian and Gay Film Festival takes place September 30 through October 8, 2011 at Cinema 21 (616 NW 21st).

This year the festival begins September 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Cinema 21 with a very special screening of local filmmaker David Weissman’s deeply moving We Were Here. The film chronicles the heavy impact the AIDS crisis had on San Francisco in the 80s through the eyes of five survivors. David Weissman will be in attendance. This special screening is followed by a Gala Opening Night Party at 23Hoyt with hosted appetizers and drinks as well as a full cash bar and Holcombe Waller will perform a short set. Tickets for this event go on sale September 1.

The festival concludes on October 8 at Cinema 21 with the BBC production of The Night Watch based on the novel by Sarah Waters. Following four characters during World War 2 in Britain, the film explores many of the themes of gender and sexual identity typical in a Sarah Waters novel.
