Where in Portland Are You Watching the World Cup?

June 10, 2010 by Dave Knows 3 Comments

The 2010 World Cup kicks off Friday, June 11th.

Though only a few bars in Portland can really be designated Soccer Bars, during the World Cup the list expands dramatically. Virtually all bars that have a TV will occasionally be tuned to world soccer this summer, and many bars, restaurants, and cafes that don’t normally sport TVs will roll in a big screen or mount an HD flat screen above the bar.

Below is a starter list of bars, restaurants, and cafes where you can catch World Cup Matches this summer, culled from the Portland Soccer Bars bar list. Please drop me a line, or leave a comment below if you know of other deserving establishments I should add to the list.

And any time you’re looking for a soccer bar, even in a non-World Cup year, visit Portland Soccer Bars to look up bars by name, quadrant or type of establishment.

June 12: USA vs. England World Cup Match, Timbers MLS Crest Unveiling

June 10, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersJoin the Portland Timbers organization* downtown Saturday, June 12th at Director Park (815 SW Park) for a viewing of the USA vs England 2010 World Cup match at 11am.

*The Timbers team, however, will be in Florida preparing for a Saturday afternoon match against Miami

The World Cup match will be shown on one of those big ass truck-portable TVs used for these sorts of events, there will be a beer garden and at halftime the Timbers will reveal the new Timbers MLS logo (view the video clues on the TimberFC YouTube channel).

But be forewarned: Downtown will be a zoo – the Grand Floral Parade takes place the same morning, starting at 10am. I recommend coming in from the south, so you don’t have to cross the parade route on your way to Director Park. See the nifty map below. Director Park is between Park and 9th, and Yamhill and Taylor.

Another tip? Take transit. MAX and most buses are running mostly normally even during the parade Saturday.

Cort and Fatboy Have an Announcement . . .

June 9, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Update: Listen to the June 9th, 2010 show podcast, or visit PDX.fm for the big announcement: Rick Emerson Returns

Cort and FatboyOn the Cort and Fatboy show today, June 9th at 10am, there will be a major announcement regarding the future of Portland Media. [Wow, this better be good!] Listen at www.pdx.fm.

From the press release:

Portland Media is a vastly different landscape than it was 5 years ago. Editors, columnists, talkers, hosts, constantly shuffled in and escorted out of the public eye. Very few of these people make the sort of impact their employers hope for. The kind of impact that keeps an audience loyal, keeps the people tuned in, keeps those eyes reading and watching. And even when these minor miracles of media success do occur, there’s no guarantee they’ll be around long – or if they’re dismissed, that they’ll ever return.

Wed. June 9th, pdx.fm’s Cort and Fatboy will play host to a pair of beloved media veterans, well-respected by both their audience and their peers, as they reveal the next step in their careers, live at 10am. This isn’t like Daniel Baldwin flying into town, twitters-a-blazin, hosting a sketchy awards show and then signing on to star in “Stripperland.” This isn’t Ron Jeremy rolling into town to preside over a buffet at a sex club. These guests are people that Oregonians care about a great deal, and their announcement should shoot down a lot of preconceptions of what local media is about and how the game can successfully be played.

My hope is that the announcement involves free unicorn shirts for everyone!

June 13: 2010 Milk Carton Boat Races

June 9, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Milk Carton Boat Races 2010My favorite Rose Festival affiliated event, the Milk Carton Boat Races, takes place this Sunday, June 13th at the casting pond in Westmoreland Park. Races begin at 11am.

Heather and I, with our friends Katie and Justin, attended last year’s event. I was disappointed there was no beer garden, but the event sponsors, the Dairy Farmers of Oregon, did hand out a bunch of freebies, including root beer floats!

We recommend you bring a blanket or some camp chairs, and a picnic lunch (but if you forget your lunch, you’re in luck: on Twitter it was announced that both Koi Fusion and Burgerville’s Nomad will make an appearance at this year’s race).

We’ll definitely be in attendance on Sunday: friend of the blog Mike Vogel, is creating a boat in the Showboat category for this year’s event!

Portland Pinball Map Conquers our Neighbors to the North

June 9, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Portland Pinball Map iPhone App Splash ScreenThe folks behind the Portland Pinball Map (and the highly recommended iPhone application) have expanded their horizons, with two new maps for our neighbors to the North:

  • British Columbia (http://pinballmap.com/bc)
  • Seattle (http://pinballmap.com/seattle/)

Just like the Portland map, the new maps enables a user in Seattle and BC to:

  • Check your favorite locations for their latest line-up
  • Search for machines throughout town
  • Browse the machines in your region
  • Search for locations with four or more machines
  • Comment on a machine’s condition

Also like the Portland map, the BC and Seattle maps are maintained by locals. The BC map is maintained by the folks at the Vancouver Regional Pinball Association (VRPA), and the Seattle map is maintained by unaffiliated volunteers.

At this moment the BC map tracks a respectable 58 locations and 91 machines, and the Seattle map 82 locations and 153 machines (compared to the mature Portland map’s hearty 176 locations and 366 machines).

(There is no accompanying iPhone app for the new regions yet, but I imagine that’s only a matter of time.)
