Portland Polish Festival Tips for 2010

September 21, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Polish FestivalAs a veteran festival goer, I have some suggestions below for how to get the most out of the Portland Polish Festival, which takes place this Saturday and Sunday, September 25 and 26! In my book, this is the best fall festival in Portland.

  • Bring cash! There’s an ATM, but why wait in two lines when you can wait in just one – the token line. Pay cash for the $1 tokens to buy drinks and food.
  • Take MAX! Get off at the Overlook stop on the Yellow Line and walk 2 blocks up Interstate. Or take the 4-Fessenden to Mississippi and Failing, walk west and cross the Failing Street Pedestrian Bridge. You don’t want to have to drive or ride your bike after a few Polish porters (see below)
  • Plan your Saturday arrival for after sunset! That is, if you’re not particularly fond of negotiating dense crowds and waiting in hour-long lines for potato pancakes. The crowd thins a bit after sunset on Saturday, and that’s the best time to be at the fest!
  • Stay late Saturday night! The street dance from 8pm-10pm is the most fun you’ll ever have dancing in a parking lot to the music of legendary Portland band Chervona!
  • Go for the combo plate and the placki! Enough pierogis, gołąbki, kiełbasa, bigos, and potato pancakes for a small village; share with a friend! Since the potato pancakes are served up from a different booth, split up and establish a meeting spot for after you’ve got your delicious food in your hands.
  • Beer!

  • Beware the Polish Porters! Delicious but strong (ranging generally from 8.5-9.5% ABV). The pilsners and other choices are also delicious, and of more typical strength. There’s also wine and mead!
  • Post-Fest: The Alibi – literally stumbling distance from the festival; one block up Interstate.

Heather and I both blogged the festival in 2008 and 2009 – reap more tips by perusing our reviews:

Tuesday Timbers Tidbits (09/21/2010)

September 21, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

TimbersThe Portland Timbers were victorious in Puerto Rico on Saturday, stealing a win off a very pretty goal in stoppage time by late season signee and first-time starter Kalif Alhassan.

On the road until the playoffs, the Timbers face Crystal Palace Baltimore this Saturday, September 25. Watch the match live at a Portland Soccer Bar! And be forewarned – Kick off has been changed to 1:30pm (Pacific).

MLS Commissioner Don Garber is in town, and apparently he likes the vibe. He will be at a PGE Park renovations ground-breaking ceremony today, and is also a guest speaker at the Sports Executive Series at the Multnomah Athletic Club.

In supporter news, the work of Portland-based photographer and Timbers Army stalwart, Steven D. Lenhart, hangs in an exhibit of football fan culture photographs in Poland as the only example from North America. He talks with Prost Amerika about the honor.

On Friday, September 24 at 10am Portland Timbers 2010 USSF Division 2 playoff strips go on sale to the general public. (Priority purchase period for season ticket holder ends Thursday at 5pm!) The first match will be played at the beautiful Merlo Field.

September 24-26: Oktoberfest at Oaks Park 2010

September 20, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Oaks Park Oktoberfest 2010The 2010 Zenner’s Oktoberfest at Oaks Park takes place Friday through Saturday, September 24-26.

The authentic German beers and food options (e.g. bratwurst, chicken schnitzel, braised red cabbage, sauerkraut, German Potato Salad, and Tater Tots!) are reasonably priced, and there are enough places to put in your order that the lines don’t often get too long.

Entertainment is provided by a multitude of polka-y bands, including Greg Meier, the Polkatones, Still Kickin’, the Alpine Echoes, the Country Dutchmen, and more.

For the competitive festival goer, there’s also pretzel toss, condiment art, chicken dance, and sausage eating contests throughout the weekend.

In addition there’s a vendor village and plenty of stuff for the kids.

Admission is $5 for adults 16 to 61, $3 for 62 and over, and kids get in for $2. Friday the fest goes from 3pm-midnight (rides 6pm-10pm), Saturday, 11am-midnight (rides noon-10pm), and Sunday 11am-7pm (rides noon-7pm). Download the full schedule of events here (pdf).

This is one of Heather‘s favorite Portland festivals, because of the weiner dog races of course! Personally I enjoy mostly the beer and accordion music, of which there is plenty!

Here are a a couple reviews of past Oaks Park Oktoberfests:

September 26: Northwest Portland Sunday Parkways

Sunday ParkwaysThe final Sunday Parkways of 2010 takes place Sunday, September 26th in Northwest Portland.

Take the opportunity to spend a pleasant (hopefully) summery Sunday morning and afternoon (10am to 3pm) winding your way on bike or foot through the mostly car free streets of Northwest, and a sliver of Southwest, Portland. The routes take you from one activity area to the next, where you can check out the vendors and demonstrations, or just sit down and relax. For this week’s event, the activity areas include Couch and Wallace Parks, the Pearl District, and the Saturday Market.

Robert Wagner and Sabrina Miller ask you to Suck It™

September 19, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Suck It™My favorite Portland internet radio personalities, Robert Wagner and Sabrina Miller, are back!

Again!

Their new show, Suck It™, debuts Monday, September 20th at 8:30am Pacific Time on PDX.fm (iTunes forthcoming).

In addition UniBash Radio returns, at 9:30am on weekdays, with Jay Mackin!

A recap for the curious: Portland Sucks, with Robert and Sabrina, had a good run end in May 2010, but Morning Submission was born! Then Portland Sucks returned . . . for a few episodes. Alas, most recently Morning Submission disappeared and mornings were quiet (if you want to know all the sordid details, Robert explains at his blog).

Meanwhile I’m still patiently waiting for Emily Gibson‘s Meat Show to return . . .
