May 11, 2001: Portland Timbers A-League Home Opener

featured-timbersAfter an eleven year absence the Portland Timbers soccer team was reborn in 2001. The team played in the A-League, the second division of American soccer at the time. The announcement that Portland had acquired an expansion team had occurred on July 31, 1999. Nearly two years later, on May 11, 2001, the team took to the field to face the Seattle Sounders in Portland’s home opener.

Before 12,295 fans in the newly renovated PGE Park, the Timbers won the match 2-0, getting goals, both assisted by Darren Sawatzky, from Mark Baena and Brent Sancho.

The Timbers Army (then known as the Cascade Rangers) sang for the home team for the first time, and Timber Jim reappeared as well that night, after a nearly 20 year absence, to cut slabs and rile up the crowd.

Portland TimbersThe Portland Timbers (3-3-1) aim to respond positively to Tuesday’s first home loss when they defend home field tonight against the Philadelphia Union (4-1-1).

The Timbers, currently sixth in the West standings, are still undefeated at home in league play, and in fact have not given up a single point at Jeld-Wen Field. Their most impressive win came last Saturday against Real Salt Lake, one of the top teams in the league. The Union, though only a year removed from a typically rocky expansion debut, have come out of the gate strong in 2011, currently enjoying second place in the East standings. This despite scoring the fewest goals, 5, of any team this year so far. The Union’s defense has given up only 2 goals in 6 games. Portland has scored, and given up, buckets of goals at home, but most recently demonstrated in their 1-0 win against Real Salt Lake that they are capable of extended stretches of good defense.

Kickoff at Jeld-Wen Field is at 7:30pm (gates open at 6pm). The game will be featured on FOX Soccer’s inaugural Soccer Night in America, and is also viewable free online on MLS MatchDay. Listen to the match on 95.5 The Game or La Pantera 940 (ESP).

Match Day (3-May-2011): Portland Timbers vs. San Jose Earthquakes

Portland TimbersThe Portland Timbers face the San Jose Earthquakes tonight, May 3, 2011, in a qualifying match for the 98th Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. The rivalry between these two teams goes back to the Timbers’ first year of existence, in 1975!

Kickoff at Jeld-Wen field is 7:30pm – tickets are still available (this match is not included in season tickets packages). There will also be a live webstream at PortlandTimbers.com, and the match will be broadcast on 95.5 The Game.

The Timbers, as you no doubt know, are undefeated at home this year. Tonight’s match will be the second of three home matches in seven days. The team defeated Real Salt Lake 1-0 last Saturday, and this approaching Friday the Philadelphia Union make their first visit to Jeld-Wen Field. Coach Spencer may get creative with the lineup to keep key players fresh. The Earthquakes, having not won a match in the last five tries, should be either inspired or dismayed – desperate in any case – so this should be a very interesting match.

Match Day (30-April-2011): Portland Timbers vs. Real Salt Lake

Portland TimbersThe Portland Timbers return to the scene of their first two (and, ahem, only) MLS wins today to face Real Salt Lake. Kickoff at Jeld-Wen Field is 7:30pm.

Real Salt Lake, coming off a tough loss Wednesday in the CONCACAF Champions League final, are 4-0-0 in league play on the season – currently good for 2nd place in the standings despite playing literally half the number of games of the league leading LA Galaxy. Portland is 6th in the standings with a respectable (for an expansion team) 2-3-1 record.

Of course Portland has not lost or even drawn at home yet, due to inspired team offense and just enough defense. Against Real Salt Lake, probably the best team faced in this young inaugural season, the Timbers will need to play inspired defense as well.
