June 25-27: North American Organic Brewers Festival 2010

June 20, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

North American Organic Brewers FestivalThe 6th annual North American Organic Brewers Festival takes place this Friday through Sunday, June 25th through 27th, at Overlook Park (Yellow Line will take you right there!).

This is my favorite summer brewers festival. It does not (yet . . .) get nearly as crowded as the Big One, and it’s not as expensive as the Pearl One. And so far (this will be the 6th NAOBF) the crowds aren’t nearly as obnoxious.

As per usual, a quarter of the beer list consists of IPAs, but there are plenty of other styles represented, including several nice summery wheat and fruit beers, some lagers, a few stouts and porters, and even a few ciders. I’m especially looking forward to Upright Brewings Rose City Seven, a barrel aged saison with flowers, and Kona Brewing‘s Oceanic Organic, a Belgian style saison. Ambacht Brewing, out of Hillsboro, is bringing two intriguing sounding beers: Ambacht Golden Rye Ale, a Belgian RyePA, and Ambacht Black Gold Porter, Belgique Porter. (Visit the NAOBF website for the full list of beers for the 2010 festival).

Admission is free, but the required taster cup is $6 ($5 with validated MAX ticket, ticket from the bike corral, or three cans of food to be donated to the Oregon Food Bank). Sample tokens are $1. The festival is open from noon until 9pm on Friday and Saturday, noon until 5pm on Sunday.

Portland Timbers Roundup (06/18/2010)

TimbersGah, first let’s get through the bad news, from last night:

Portland Loses Again At Home by Kevin at Dropping Timber

The Timbers lost to Minnesota 1-0 in front of 8,000+ fans at PGE Park tonight, already their third home loss of the season. Portland (3-5-4) is now winless in their last 8 league matches and remains in a 3-way tie for 7th place in the overall standings.

In a physical game, full of yellow cards and fouls, the Stars would grab control early with a first half goal, eventually taking a 1-0 lead into halftime. However, the match would change when James Marcelin received a red card early in the 2nd half, the foul called in the Timber’s box. [more]

Timbers lose to Minnesota 1-0 in another poor performance, prompting talk of a “different direction” by Geoffrey C. Arnold at The Oregonian

Maybe it’s time to re-evaluate the 2010 version of the Portland Timbers.

Whenever the Timbers have lost a game to an “inferior” team, the rationale from the players and coaches was the team “played down” to the competition. The Timbers lost to another such team, this time a 1-0 loss to the NSC Minnesota Stars. [more]

Of course this comes after Tuesday’s win, where the optimistic among us thought . . .

Timbers regain their game versus the Sol by Kip Kesgard at OregonLive

Despite rumors that had me staying away from PGE Park on Tuesday evening recovering from a bout with stomach flu, I had heard that there would be a swarm of angry bees that would end up attacking the Portland Timbers – Sonoma County Sol U.S. Open Cup match. Apparently, they have been making their homes around all World Cup soccer matches lately, putting fans in dire peril especially if they are allergic. The threat of bees or continued rain showers didn’t keep a good portion of fans away, however, as the game went on as scheduled. [more]

Alex Nimo’s newfound maturity scores more than goals for Timbers by Geoffrey C. Arnold at The Oregonian

Alex Nimo needed someone to push him. Someone to help him increase his drive and productivity.

Timbers coach Gavin Wilkinson has done just that, and the result is Nimo tapping into the potential that has been associated with him since his days at Benson High School. [more]

Win Free Tickets to Timbers vs. Manchester City on July 17th

On Saturday, July 17th 2010, I’ll be dressed in grey slacks and a long sleeve white shirt, probably sweating in sweltering heat, at an undisclosed location on Sauvie Island; one of my best friends is getting married. I’ve known the guy since first grade. I don’t think I can get out of it 😉

But my obligation is your gain – I have a pair of tickets I can’t use to the Portland Timbers friendly against Manchester City at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland, on the same day. [more]

June 18-20: Astoria Scandinavian Midsummer Festival 2010

June 17, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Coffee and Viking HatThe 43rd annual Astoria Scandinavian Midsummer Festival (aka Astoria Scanfest 2010) takes place this weekend, June 18-20.

Heather and I attended the Scanfest for our first time last summer, [that’s me pictured, preparing for the 2009 fest with strong coffee and appropriate head gear] and we had a blast. Read her account of our adventure:

  • Tank Full Of Gas, Chapter 16: Astoria Midsummer Scandinavian Fest, Part One
  • Chapter 16: Astoria Midsummer Scandinavian Fest, Part Two

This year’s festivities begin Friday with the Coronation of Miss Scandinavia, the torchlight procession to the bonfire to burn hexes representing bad luck, and the queen’s ball. And also very importlantly, on Friday from 9-11pm Beer-drinking Music is scheduled for the Beer Garden.

Saturday‘s events include the Optog, a walking parade through downtown Astoria. And the raising of the midsummer pole followed by ring dancing, and an evening open dance.

Music and dancing take place throughout the festival, all days. Entertainers include the Sigtuna Brass Sextet from Sweden, the Karelian Folk Music Ensemble from Finland and Russia, Pekka and Perttu from Finland, and the Ultima Thule Choir from Norway. Vendors will be on hand selling handcrafts and imported items from Scandinavia. And don’t forget the Aebelskiver (Scandinavian donut), Krumkakke (crisp flat cookie rolled into cone shape), Lefse (flat bread with butter, cinnamon and sugar), Riisipuuro (rice pudding with fruit soup), and more!

Sunday the festival wraps up with a Pannukaku Breakfast and more music and fun.

And I’ll leave you with one of the highlights of last year’s festival: Kerry Christensen, Master Yodeler performing the The Norwegian Cow Song!
